Suspension bushes worn

Featured Replies

My Karoq has just had its first MOT and has had two advisory’s both for Nearside Front and Offside Front Suspension arm bushes/pins worn and a third for failing Nearside Front Shock Absorber.  The car has only done 28,000 miles from new and the majority of it on motorways and French Autoroutes with very little local use  so I am somewhat surprised by this,  I ran my previous car, a Jaguar XF S Portfolio for over 100,000 miles and never had a single problem with these components.  Are these components particularly weak on these models?

I was surprised to see the track control arms made from pressed metal on our 24 model - cheapness rules eh?

Yes they are very weak, I have changed both shockers and bushes on 2 year old cars.

You mean the anti roll bar links right? Or the wishbones? The old golf 5 had cast wishbones then they went onto pressed steel for cheapness.

My 4 year old Karoq has just its second MOT at 21,691 miles. There were no problems reported last year, but this year I've been advised that "the nearside and offside front lower arm bushes are slightly worn" and that my front and rear brake pads are 20% worn.

The shock absorbers are fine, although my previous Golfs had regular warnings about them having slight oil misting on them.

I suppose they're "slightly worn" the moment the car drives out of the factory.

When they tell you stuff like this, you do always feel like you're being softened up for a future hit.

Senior moment - yes, you are right Blue, anti roll bar links - now just twisted metal sheet, used to be rod.

My 5 year old 32,000 mile Karoq has passed its MOT without any advisory’s but the Vehicle Health Check done before the MOT picked up red alerts for both lower arm bushes separated from lower arm and o/s/f leaking. Total estimated cost £879. Any advice appreciated.

Slightly worn and 20% worn - £879?

I'd do nothing - carry on as you were..........

Second opinion maybe?

I'd have thought seperated lower arm bushes would be picked up on MOT?

Just an update on this as I've only just had the work carried out at the indie Hitchin Audi/VW place in Hitchin, Herts.

They replaced both lower wishbone arms and both shock absorbers. He showed me the state of the wishbone arms and it really shocked me at the state of them, covered in surface rust and the bushes had disintegrated into a black oily granular rubber. He asked if the car had been left unused on a soft surface (like a field?) as he hadn't seen this level of degradation before at such a low mileage. The car hadn't been left standing, but, it had been left standing for 5 months somewhere before delivery waiting for supplies of the essential "chips" post Covid supply issues.

If anyone has a 71 car that was awaiting parts before delivery I'd suggest they get the suspension checked out.
