Getting the bonnet open on a 2012 VW Caddy

Featured Replies

I'm trying to work on a neighbours Caddy, but it looks like the bonnet release cable has disconnected at the slam panel/lock carrier connection, which I see is a fairly common 'feature'.

I've been watching videos on YT and the only one that makes a bit of sense is the small aperture immediately behind the VW logo in the centre of the grill.  I can see what looks like the bonnet mounted retaining bar/loop, but there doesn't look to be enough room to get anything past it to release any latch:

I'd be grateful for any bright ideas or suggestions as to the simplest way to release the latch.

Fair play to VW for not making it easy, but we've got an injector to change, so need the bonnet up.

I don't know if you saw this video but if the Caddy is the same, gives a general idea of layout too. -

Thanks Nigel - yes I had, and I also own a 7.5 GTI.  They're certainly similar.

We eventually got in by jacking it up and dropping the OSF wheel arch liner to gain access.  It wasn't as onerous as I thought.  And the injector came out beautifully 😁

Well done.

Funnily enough that was on the other video I started to look at but it does depend on the location of the cable (mechanism or joint) failure.  I remember watching an older video of John Twist trying to show how to get into a stuck 1970s MG "trunk" and failing before the video time ran out, shows how tricky these things can be sometimes, one day things fall in place and another things just fall apart, a simple job gets awkward and an awkward job seems quite simple.   Don't risk a repeat as Sod's Law often applies. 😁
