Wheel bolts versus studs

Featured Replies

This isn’t a specific Enyaq thing, I’m putting on my winter wheels and getting a bit frustrated aligning the bolts with the holes in the hub.

Older cars had studs which made alignment a doddle, so why the change?

From an engineering perspective studs are better as the wheel nuts impart tension and little torque to the studs so if you over torque the threads tend to fail first.
On the other hand impart both tension and torque so a bolt tends to fail just below the head.

Thoughts?

It is a few decades later to bother about what German Manufacturers thought was 'Simply Clever' and more economic.

Thanks @Gizmo, I’d just checked the threads, will get a couple on order.
