What oil

Featured Replies

Sorry if this info is available somewhere . I did try a search. Had a low oil level warning pop up on the dash on a 300 mile trip to Cornwall yesterday which I was a bit surprised and disappointed about as the car only had a service in May. What oil should I top it up with please guys?

Good morning, oil to VW spec 504/507, 5W-30 for TSI.

Sorry should have said it’s a VRS Diesel - so what would I need?

Right I see. I’d not heard of VW type 504/507 before. Looking online I see now. How many litres would my car need? Wondering whether to buy a small or large bottle.

Looked up for 2012-2021 2.0 TDI - same VW spec, either 0W-30 or 5W-30.

Did you check oil level before start of this trip - or after the last service?

If oil level is around bottom of dip stick, probably about 1 litre - only put 1/4 litre in first, wait 2 mins, then wipe stick, recheck and repeat. Fill to upper level line. Do not overfill.

Only checked when I bought the car in July and it was full then . Previous car was a golf 1.9tdi and that used next to no oil hence why I’m a bit surprised

Mk3 VRS diesels or anything with 2.0 tdi ea288 engines quite often consume some oil. Especially pre-fl imo. Not all of them tho. I believe piston rings were updated 2017.

I think there is multiple threads about this even in this forum, google it if you are interested.

Just find your user manual and at least in mine it says my car can use upwards of 0.5L of oil per 1000km and that is considered within spec for warranty. My car is outside of warranty as it's 8 years old, but my car use 0.25L per 1000km and is considered perfectly normal. My car has recently tipped 200.000km so if a brand new car can use twice this amount and still be within spec, then it's fine for me.

2016 Skoda Octavia Scout

Actually as much as Dealership Staff or Customer services says 0.5 litres in 1,000 km  / 621 miles is within tolerances or being acceptable use it is not just because every owners manual says it is.

Engines have been replaced while in warranty as excessive oil users when Officially Tested using the VW way and using 0.3 litres in 1,000 km .

Always ask whoever to show the specifications for acceptable oil use for different engines and not the cover every engine type / age as in Owners Manuals.

Ask that person for the Official Test how much a litre of engine oil weighs, they can ask a friend.

.................

The Invoice shown was from a Muppet Technician thinking 1 litre of Engine oil weighs the same as H20.

A litre still in the container does not weight 1,000 grams as they had for the 1.4 TSI engines 3.6 litre of oil capacity.

TDI's can be oil burners....just make sure that you carry around 1L of 5W/30 around with you at all times and check the oil weekly.

Can be either piston ring related or head gasket related.  Up to you on whether you fix it or live with it.
