My car does not exist?

Featured Replies

Just bought a Superb 3.6 V6 4x4 estate 2014.  Go to insure it....   enter reg. on just about every comparison site and a few insurer own sites and get 'we cannot find a match for your reg..'  So I go to enter it manually and get a list of choices, none of which are this car. They list all post 2013 3597cc 4x4 estates as 'TSI' which is patently wrong as there isn't a turbo V6 (sadly!). Has anyone else found this? How did you get round it? I'm going to try and speak to a human, but I'm not holding out much hope that they'll be able to change anything as clearly the databases are incorrect.

Go to a bricks and mortar insurance broker.

Thanks for response,  I tried Direct Line and Adrian Flux. None recognise the reg. and this is no doubt due to the fact that the previous/first owner was a 'government agency' (blacked out rear windows, fittings for hidden radios etc.!) and other than DVLA check tax and MOT, everything is blocked.  The above insurers at least allowed me to put in 3,597cc and 4x4 DSG without the TSI bit, but were way expensive.  I've spoken to a very nice human at Swiftcover who has noted it and will be referring their quote algorithms to their underwriter, after I explained that there is no such thing as a 3,597cc TSI, but in the meantime I am insured.

On the positive side it is almost certain that you will be immune from speed cameras, traffic light cameras congestion charge fines etc.

Whilst your car registration does not exist to the insurers it will exist on the above ANPR camera systems with what is effectively a get out of jail free marker against the registration saying "no action to be taken" diplomatic vehicles, undercover police etc, MI5 MI6 etc vehicles are all given this marker.

In a previous life I was drinking after work with my clients from the Traffic Control Systems Unit of Transport for London, the congestion charge was just coming in and we were discussing these exempt vehicles, I jokingly asked the guy if he could enter my registration plate on the system and to my surprise he was considering it, it could be done, then my closest friend amongst them wisely pulled him into line saying that the fallout were it to be discovered would be immense.

Your car sounds like a keeper!!!!!

Hmm,  more a sleeper than a keeper, but indeed a keeper. Once the V5c hits DVLA, all that marker stuff will vanish sadly.  I couldn't even register it in my name online. No service history to be found, even a Skoda specialist couldn't find anything. But, as I too had a previous life, I know how these things get driven (no short trips to the shops or school runs or towing), but also how well they are maintained. Volvo V70s in my previous life had a three year, 100,000 mile warranty, but they rarely went anywhere near a dealer. Always maintained in the 'company' workshop, using all Volvo parts.

Someone has decided to 'retain' the umbrella from the back door though, probably took it out to put a sub-machine gun in there...😜

Hi.

Did we manage to offer you a quotation regardless if we could find the specific vehicle on the data base? We have the facility to quote for vehicles that don't appear on the recognised vehicle databases.

Regards,

Dan.

Hi Dan, I've been a customer for many years with a kit car I once built and my current modified Jeep, but after an eye-watering quote for an Audi A4 Allroad D5, I went to Swiftcover where it was almost half less. It's a standard car so went with them for the Skoda. Underwritten by Axa, the same as the Jeep.  Maybe next time, and certainly if I end up with another classic or something odd.

Hi.

No problem at all. Appreciate your honest comments.

Regards,

Dan.
