Change it for an IV

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone, I'm thinking of changing our 2014 Superb Elegance estate which I've had since new (185,000 miles). It's fine but getting a little tired and I'm thinking of an IV.

It's been the best car I've ever bought, so keen to stay with the brand and I like an estate car. We have another car which is fully electric so have the charger set up etc.

I'm torn between another Superb and an Octavia (don't need quite the same amount of space but the Superb seems to be  better value).

Budget is a max of £24k,

I'd be really interested in views and suggestions about what to (and what  not to )  look for

Many thanks

You will not get a new one for £24k.

Year or two back was a shortage of components and big production backlog, sales of iv versions were suspended for months, so finding one that you like might be hard work.  From memory Octavia sales were suspended for much longer.

Without knowing your mileage, or type of usage (short town journeys, big hauls fully loaded etc), you have to decide if paying the few thousand pounds extra for an iv over the tsi version makes sense.  Unless you do lots of short journeys on charge at home electric then probably cutting fuel bill from around £150 for every 1000 miles in a tsi to about £110 per thousand miles in an iv.   Let's say £1000 every 20-25k miles.  So if need to pay a £5k premium for iv  then only really going to save if do over 100k miles.

Of course if you are replacing a 2014 version, then have to assume keep car for 10 years, and to be honest some of the latest models to euro6e emissions spec have new equipment that no one knows how long they will last trouble free in real world.   Generally more gadgets that are fitted equals more bits that can potentially fail and need expensive repair.   All worth considering.

Hello John, thanks for such a thorough response, I've been away for a few days so just catching up.

No, I'm definitely not expecting a new one - more like 2/3 gear old version.

I like the idea of an iV as we do such a mix - lots of shortish journeys and then also 250 mile trips up to Glasgow so I thought the iV would suit and also the we have lots of panels/batteries which would make the charging very cheap (although accept your calculations as well....)

That's going to be a Mk3 (MkIII) model so I've asked for the thread to be moved to that forum where you'll get more visibility. This is the forum for the Mk4 (MkIV) model just launched, not for the iV designated hybrids generally!

@Kt1966 you will definitely benefit from cheap running. If you aren't already on a cheap overnight tariff I suggest you move over to it to make best use of your car and house batteries.

With cheap charging @SurreyJohns calcs above would be needing a rework. It costs me roughly 3ppm on electric compared to 15-20ppm on fuel. So the £150 to £110 would be more like £150 to £50. Clearly this depends on how you use the car.

One benefit of short local runs is not running the engine so less risk of it not warming up.

I managed to find & buy my pre reg Mk 3 IV this year with 38 miles on the clock for £26.5k from West London Skoda, it is only a SE Tech model, but it does everything I need. If you search you may find another somewhere.

That's a nice deal. Enjoy the cheap running.
