Power steering noises

Featured Replies

Hi. My ‘58 mk2 makes power steering noises at low revs. It was sat with low miles in the last five years (30k now). Should I change the fluid and add one of those ‘rejuvenate the seals’ products? This is the first vehicle I have owned with the electric type PAS, so I am not sure if this trick will work! Or do I just turn up the radio at low revs? Are there any useful videos showing how to get to the PAS unit to inspect it. Thanks for your time.

Might just be an indication of a weak battery, do you know how old it is?

Fluid doesn't degrade in these really.

Oh, hadn’t thought of that. I have a new battery to put in as the old battery isn’t holding charge. I have been putting off doing it as I know the PAS is under the battery box and being lazy not wanting to keep taking it in and out. So, I should just put the new battery on this weekend and fingers crossed the annoying frequencies should go. Thanks. I’ve just cleared my earwax, so I can hear these sounds more clearly. Which is nice.

... and check the PAS fluid level when the battery is out.

Good idea. Is it just a simple unscrew of the green plastic cap/bolt thing and inspect? The video I saw wasn’t very clear. Cheers.

Yes. I check mine a couple of times a year and the level has never changed.

I think there's a little dipstick built into the cap, but it's lots of years since I last looked.

I remember ours being very resistant to being unscrewed the first time I tried, probably hadn't moved since it left the factory a decade or more before when I tried.  Access was awkward to get a good grip though.

Oh no, the usual car fun of scraped knuckles and swearing then..! Penetrating spray on plastic? Might that reduce the need for profanity? Thanks.

I wouldn't want to try oils on plastic, might make them swell up and get tighter.

My was no problem at all to undo. The car had been regularly serviced when I bought it.
