Car windows opening on their own.

Featured Replies

Came back from holiday abroad to find all windows part opened car flooded in front foot Wells due to rain entering. Definitely was locked up before leaving.

Then today came back to car to find all windows ALL the way down car still locked.

Please advise.

Normally it's when you've sat on your keys or had them in your pocket and accidently pushed and held the unlock button , as well as unlocking the car it will drop the windows. When you don't use the door handles to enter the car - it automatically re locks but the windows stay down.

I once managed to get my mkI Superb very wet inside after I did the same with the keys in my pocket whilst sat on the settee. Never did the same on my mkII Superb as I now always hang the keys up but I did use the feature in the summer to drop the windows approaching the car parked up in the summer to let the hot air out! Likewise pushing an holding the lock button is useful for raising all windows. Infact I really missed the function when I bought a new car this year but discovered in the manual it was a possible dealer enabled setting - now done!

I've had the same issue years ago (already have my S2 since 2011).
There were two possible causes:

One is mentioned above (long press on the open key opens all windows).

The other possible cause is "rain closing" which is supposed to automatically close the windows of a parked car when it starts raining. There could be some bug in that function which opens instead of closed the windows in some circumstances.

I disabled both and never had the issue again. But also never bothered to find out which of the two was the primary cause.

Could also be a wiring problem in the driver's door where the loom passes through the door hinge area.  It can be repaired or you can replace the full loom.  Lots of YouTube videos on it.  Common problem in VAG cars of the era.
