Octavia 1.5 TSI 2018DSG Popping & Rattling Noise Cold start

Featured Replies

I bought the car from Skoda authorized service at 73000 km and is currently at 99000 km. Standard maintenance was done at the service and I have it done at the service every year according to the service's recommendations. When the weather is above 12-13 degrees, the cold start makes a sound like a popping sound and it goes away after a few seconds. This sound only occurs when the weather is warm above 12 degrees and the car is cold or when I use it for a while, turn it off, and do a cold start for about an hour.

There is also the famous rattling sound, but this sound is more intense when the weather is hot. I hardly hear it at all in cold weather.

Does anyone have an idea?

Here is the video for the sound.

Okay. I think this is an oil pressure issue. The cam adjustment is not correct and that's the noise you initially are hearing. Caused by initial poor oil delivery into the cam phasor. Suggest new oil / filter as a first step. When was the last time the timing chain/belt was done? Have you scanned the car for any faults at all? If so, please post here.

There is no belt change since I bought the car and there is no change history in the service logs. The last oil change is done around 84k km and now the car is around 100k km and the next oil change is around 14k km according to the service. Have not done any scann snd I was planning to make a service check appointment. But beforehand I wanted to get some advices.

but this sound only happens when the weather is hot above 12 and above. In a cold weather I do not have it.

And do you think it's something I have to take care of fast and can damage something? The earliest possible appointment I can take is around 3 weeks after because of the new year holidays etc and there is no earlier possible date.

An oil change/filter should be done as soon as possible.    It looks like you are on extended servicing schedule (I personally do not recommend this - the car should have an oil/filter every 10,000 miles/16,000 kms).  It is particually important with the ACT cylinder drop technology engines that the oil is good and changed regularly.

Take the car to an independant VAG specialist and get them to do a service for you.  Even your local VW dealer can do it for you if you ask nicely (although it won't show up in your online service schedule)

Hi, yes I am on extended servicing schedule but I will keep that and ask for oil change every year when they do the yearly service. I will try to make and appointment as soon as possible only for the oil/filter change.

And do you also think the noise comes from the cam belt? The sound towards the end of the video seemed to me to be coming from the belt also.

Its worth getting them to check the belt and the tensioner.  If the tensioner is either fully extended or worn - or worst - partly disintegrated/broken, then this would also cause that kind of noise.

As I said in my first post, getting a oil and filter service done is really important and then you can re-evaluate.  If the noise goes away, you know to do more servicing, if it doesn't then its worth looking at the cam-belt.

Thank you so much! I will just drive there and try to convince them that I need an urgent appointment to let them check all of the points. :)

Thank you for your help!

Hi, I finally got an appointment and let them check the car. They did the oil change at my request and checked the belt etc. I had to pay extra to have it checked. As a final result, they told me that the noise I hear from the start when it is cold is normal for those engines and could happen for a couple of seconds it's completely normal. It wasn't happening before but according to the age of the car, it's acceptable (that's what they say!).

After all of these checks there is no satisfying result from my side and don't know what to do. Probably will look for some unofficial Skoda repair guys to double-check it which is not easy to find and every check costs money.. I will try to keep you guys updated if I get some results.

I'm definately hearing a pully bearing sounding rough when the idle dies down when I listen to your initial video again.  Can you do us a favour - redo the video you just did when you first reported this issue; do a cold start for us, so we can compare videos if nothing else.  Can you also tell us what grade of fuel you are using?  Are you able to run a tank or two of 97/99 RON rated Super Unleaded through the car and take the car on a sprited drive - or just a really good blast down the autobahn (don't hold back the horses).  The car just sounds - rough - but then again the ACT 1.5 engines were never the most refined.
