Warning light, not fully illuminated

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I parked up the ol Octavia for a few weeks as we got a 7seater but now the time has come to test it and sell it,

A weird light has come on it and done a scan on vcds but nothing coming up from it,

It's not fully illuminated, but still there when I checked the manual it says it's something to do with automatic transmission lever, but I've a manual, attaching a picture to show the difference in the illumination

It's still on when the seatbelt light is off

The only indication I can see in that image is the red symbol and would more suggest to me something to do with a foot-operated brake system - is there anything unusual with the handbrake on the Mk2?

Apologies I thought I uploaded a picture of it on with the seatbelt light on to show the difference in illumination,

No it's been parked for about 3 weeks with the handbrake on, I drove it about 30 miles spin today and the light didn't go off,

Handbrake, brakes etc all working good.

What I meant by my question was - is the handbrake operated with a normal lever - or is it foot-operated?

What does the 'not fully illuminated' symbol look like?

Apologies, handbrake is operated by normal lever between Seats,

Then above image is the not fully illuminated symbol, it's dim red light compared to the other red lights on the dash,

I can only see one symbol illuminated in the image you posted. Would be better if you describe it - or draw a highlight ring on the image.

I looked at the warning lights section in my car handbook and your icon is not included. I do have a different icon for brake failure / low brake fluid so perhaps your icon means that.

Another possibilty is that your icon is a "spare" that is only used in certain markets. When a car has been standing for a while in wet/high humidity conditions you can find any of the icons being randomly displayed until the car has dried out.

I suggest you use the car for a few days with the heater on high to see if the icon goes away.

If you have a Climatronic system then make sure you switch on the aircon compressor as well as setting  high heat as this will reduce the humidity more quickly.

Cheers mate I will use it for next few days to see if it helps, appreciate your help and time

To ask clarification again - is the symbol you refer to the shoe/foot within a circle, surrounded by two brake shoes, all in red?

  • Author

Yes mate that's the light

From a search on a VAG site, that symbol is 'Automatic Shift Lock' warning, informing that the automatic gearbox is locked in neutral - press on brake pedal required to release - as you say you have a manual shift, this must be some sort of instrument cluster error.

Cheers mate hoping that the driving for a few days will help it come back to normal,

Hey guys, back again (with better picture) drove it for the last few days but things seem to have got worse,

The fuel light came on last night and now the oil light is on dim also, plus when I use the right indicator the cruise control symbol also flashes.

I currently have the dash console removed and in beside my stove to try dry any damp that may be in there.

Just wondering what else could it be? The red foot pedal one is on constantly, (dim mode) the oil light only came on with fuel light, and the cruise control only comes on with right indicator use.

I used a vcds from a friend last week just wondering if it was a knock off device would it have f@@ked up my dash?

The low fuel light will be a correct indication as fuel level appears to be in the red area of the gauge.

Have you checked the engine lube oil level on the dipstick?

The fuel light is correct as you need more fuel.

The random display of dim icons which change when you switch on other correct icons such as the turn signals is exactly what I had until I dried out the car interior.

I had the same, ended up taking the cluster to a local specialist for repair. I think they replaced some LEDs.

No.

The replacement would need coding with the mileage and the immobiliser code otherwise the car will not start.

LED replacement is cheaper.

Cheers mate appreciate it, save me a few quid in chancing it.

Led replacement fixes a common problem of some leds not working. There is a how to do it guides with photos in a couple of threads on this forum.

It is not a fix for the wrong leds being shown.

Except that taking the display out of the car for a while will dry it out.

Not strickly true. It depends on the LED and the circuit.

However I do agree, ensure the vehicle interior is completely dried out and free of any condensation before appying a fix. If the OP can, take the instrument cluster out and store it somewhere dry and humidity free for a day or two. On top of a desktop computer/server would be my best option but an airing cuboard or some place like that would do.
