Choosing a spare wheel advice needed

Featured Replies

I have become increasingly anxious, after some recent issues, about not having a spare in my boot. After some deliberation, I have decided against a narrow space-saver and am looking at getting a 16" steel wheel. Here's what I have on my Skoda Superb (3)  SE L Executive ('67) at the moment:-

18" Modus, 8.0Jx18, ET44, 5x112 with 235/45 tyres. (Wheel part # 3V0071498F / 3V0601025J )

Here's what I'm looking to put in the wheel well:-

16" steel, 6.5jx16, ET43, 5x112 with a 205/60 tyre. (Wheel part # 5Q0601027CJ )

Can anyone see any issues with this plan?

Someone will help,

but looking at the various threads there are over the years can pass the time til they do.

From a quick google, it looks like 5Q0601027CJ has a 6J rim width, not a 6.5J rim width.

205/60R16 is not a standard Superb MK3 tyre size. It's outside diameter is smaller than the Superb MK3's standard tyre sizes, including the 235/45R18...as shown in the chart below.

Perhaps use a 215/60R16 on a 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim (from Karoq) as a spare. This should fit in the spare wheel well without lifting the carpet.

Outside diameter of tyre

235/45R18 668.7mm

205/60R16 652.4mm (2.4% smaller outside diameter compared to 235/45R18)

215/60R16 664.4mm (0.6% smaller outside diameter compared to 235/45R18)

205/65R16 672.9mm (0.6% bigger outside diameter compared to 235/45R18)

An alternative suggestion for a spare wheel on the Superb MK3 is 205/65R16 on the standard 6.5Jx16 ET41 5/112 57.1 rim specification. Again, this should fit in the spare wheel well without raising the carpet.

@Carlston Firstly, thank you for contributing to this thread with invaluable information. It was remiss of me not to express my gratitude at the time, I apologise. Time flies, and I need to re-visit this. If I have understood correctly, I plan to purchase the following: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/364188522719 . Is this suitable? From what you say, it seems it will fit the wheel well and not cause the floor to lift, is that correct? All things considered (especially diameter), would you say this option is a better bet than a "205/65R16 on the standard 6.5Jx16 ET41 5/112 57.1 rim specification", as you also suggest above? I appreciate I may seem overly nervous and fussy, but I am lacking confidence and want to ensure I do the right thing (and also not waste money!).

I suspect the tyre on that ebay listing is a budget tyre, which are in general best avoided.

Reasonable quality tyres aren't always expensive, with Camskill listing Kumho ES31 and Kumho HS52 in size 215/60R16 94V for about £68.

My preference for a spare for the Superb MK3 FWD (not 4x4) would be something like Vredestein Ultrac+ in size 215/60R16 94V. It's listed on Camskill for about £20 more than the above mentioned Kumho tyres.

Being winter, steel rims are currently more than summer prices...with the Alcar 6665 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim being listed on mytyres for about £76 including shipping to the UK. Come spring/summer I expect this price will drop a lot. The reason for the high price of steel rims in the winter, is because of the high demand for winter tyres.

The weight of a 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim (from Karoq) is about 7.60kg, whereas the weight of a 6.5Jx16 ET41 5/112 57.1 alloy rim (from Superb MK3) is about 9.9kg. So that's 2.3kg more, which is about 30% more.

When it comes to weight, the 18" alloy rims are often over 12kg and the 19" alloy rims are often over 14kg. So the 7.60kg steel rim is quite light weight by comparison.

Thank you @Carlston :) I take onboard everything you say and am grateful for all the detail and additional information and considerations.

With regards to the specific eBay listing, and putting the tyre choice to one side (the company can change it as desired) for a moment, would the wheel itself and tyre size etc. be a good fit for my car driving wise and for storage in the wheel well, including consideration for the floor level?

The standard 16" wheel (215/60R16 6.5Jx16 ET41) only lifts the carpet up about 6mm, so a 215/60R16 6Jx16 ET43 should be sufficient to get a level carpet.

One owner fitted a 205/65R16 6.5Jx16 ET41 without problems. 215/60R16 6Jx16 ET43 is the same width, so should also fit without problems. The 2mm greater offset should also help, because if the toolkit is resting on the back of the rim that will free up an additional 2mm of space.

As you can see in the chart below, a 205/65R16 fitted to a 6.5J rim is the same width as a 215/60R16 fitted to a 6J rim.

Actual inflated width of tyre (measured from sidewall to sidewall, at the widest point)

205/65R16 fitted to 6J rim 209mm

205/65R16 fitted to 6.5J rim 215mm

215/60R16 fitted to 6J rim 215mm

215/60R16 fitted to 6.5J rim 221mm
