Bush's, Brakes and Front Shocks after 22k miles

Featured Replies

Just had my Karoq 2.0TSI Sportline serviced by local Skoda dealer 2020 with 22600 miles on the clock…..Was quite surprised to see amber recommendations at a cost of about £1300 to remediate!

Front Pads 50% worn but discs have approx 25% of inner surface corroded – Recommending replacing discs and obviously pads – Presume gone are the days where you would go through two sets of pads before you would even need to change discs? – Not picked up on MOT just health check.

Slight misting on both front shocks – This seems to be a common issue listed with a lot of VW based platform vehicles, listed on MOT and Health Check.

NS and OS Front suspension lower arm rear bush starting to un-bond, however they then say there is no play in it and was not flagged on MOT just Health Check.

All in all quite miffed by this…

Presume this is one of those ignore jobs and maybe get a good independent to check in 6 months time.

The car has got extended warranty as we had a good deal on a service and warranty package and to be fair to the dealer they did say they maybe able to get the shocks through warranty but I imagine that may have just been to soften the blow. They did offer to check it all again in six months time free of charge.

Its lucky most people don’t take it literally when they are 4x4 and actually take them off road. 4x4 in terns of drive but components must be weak as.

Yes, the "hidden" inner face of brake discs quietly corroding - all looks good from the outer face condition, but not really the whole story!  It was when I serviced the front brakes on my wife's 2015/50,000 mile VW Polo that I spotted uneven wear on the front inner pads - so time for new discs and pads.

Rubber bonded mounting bushes, I suppose that they are only reporting what they have seen, I bought a slightly used 2011 Audi S4 back in 2013, just because it was not quite a "run of the mill" car, I thought that I was playing safe booking it into my local Audi dealer for MOTs, that worked for the 1st and 2nd MOT then at the 3rd one it got advisories for some of it's rubber bushes, now for an A4/s4 of that age, the mileage should have been maybe 60+K miles, mine was only 27K miles and I had already checked over ALL the suspension bushes, so for MOTs I quickly moved away to a proper local VAG Indie and many year later still have not had any advisories at MOT  time - though to be honest, now approaching it's 14th birthday, some of the suspension bushes are showing their age and I have made up a kit of parts to replace them all later this year.

Misting dampers, yes VW Group do have a "pass" or "fail" criteria for that, Crasher showed me pictures of both as my daughter's 2019 SEAT Leon Cupra, I consider, is now into the "fail" condition and should get replaced before the next MOT.

I would have a good independent or yourself or a friend check the Brakes, *discs and pads* now.

Sadly up-selling can have owners / customers distrusting Main Dealers.   If they are at it be sure to talk to the Dealer Principle and the Master Tech,  not Service Desk Staff or a Workshop / service manager.

Is the recommended servicing up to date?     Servicing brakes is Simply Clever, not just always replacing parts.  Main Dealers do not service brakes unless paid.

Has the brake fluid been changed?

More important has inspections or look see,s done like a Air Filter @ 4 years or each year not at 6 years.

Yes had car since almost new 1st owner and followed the skoda service to the letter.

Strange, our Karoq is 7 years old this year and still on original dampers, brake discs etc. Cost us nowt apart from normal servicing done by an independent garage, never use dealers once my cars are out of warranty.

Doesn't bode well.

Based on current mileage and use profile my 2023 1.5 TSi will be around 55k miles when the first MOT is due - I'd be extremely dissapointed if it failed it's first MOT for anything beyond my direct control (bulbs, tyres, wipers etc).

Probably more a "time" thing than "mileage" thing, so I would not expect your car to be suffering from front disc inner faces corroding, I'm slightly surprised that the OP ended up with that or claim of that at the 5 year point though, but seeing is believing - or not!

Brakes and discs are not really a mileage thing.  Clearly if you live in a very hilly area, or drive in heavy urban traffic, you use brakes lot more than someone cruising along open road.
Pads at 50% are ok and don't need changing unless doing discs.   If discs are surface rust don't worry, if bits are flaking off then change is sensible.

Shock absorbers leaking need changing, but token bit of misting is not uncommon and doesn't need doing.  (Although if they are being done for free under warranty then get it done, as will get new parts for nowt)

Bushes, much harder to know from description, obviously rubber deteriorates with age.  However the term unbond (rather than splitting, cracking, perishing etc) sounds like they weren't stuck properly when manufactured, so there is case for those to be fixed under warranty as a build fault too.  Although wear and tear of suspension components is often excluded from warranty.  Think they need to clarify bonding that sounds like it  didn't stick properly.
