Drive Modes - Reset on each new start?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've been browsing here since I got my 2017 220tsi back in June. Great resource and lots of very helpful people - thanks!

I've noticed since I've had the car that the drive mode I was in on the previous journey remains 'selected' (i.e the drive mode light is on and the mode shown on the car's menu) when I switch the car on again, but isn't actually engaged- i.e eco mode doesn't coast and the gears are shown D1, D2 etc rather than E1, E2 etc. Is this minor annoyance normal and a quirk of the car, or is this something that's gone wrong on mine?

TIA

My 2019 always reverts driving mode on restart. Very annoying.

I do hope it can be set to remember the last set driving mode.

Early models retained the mode, later models reverted. I thought it was a facelift thing in 2020/21 but given george_d's mentioning 2019 then it must have been earlier than that.

Either way, you're saying the car tells you its in a specific mode, but it isn't?

Mine is just prefacelift. I have learnt some parts are face-lift and some aren't.

Yeah, the drive mode button is illuminated on start-up indicating one is selected but it clearly isn't (if you know what I mean). Not the end of the world, but I'd prefer if it was a bit clearer. There appear to be no issues with drive-modes once reselected.

Mines a 67 plate 2017 model so clearly pre-facelift.

Hybrid. That can be annoying to find parts potentially.

Yeah that sounds odd. Guessing its a "worse things happen at sea" moment but at the same time, I can't see that being by design. Do you know what software version you have? (admittedly its a stab in the dark whether this would be relevant but worth checking)

As mentioned previously, I believe some do remember the last setting and some don't. Luckily mine does. It's set to 'eco' and doesn't change unless I press the mode button.

I have a suspicion that the button is only illuminated when 'D' is selected, anything else and the button stays dark. I'll check tomorrow....too cold now to venture out.🥶

keep in mind there r two things here - Driving Profiles vs Drive Modes

Driving Profiles (Eco, Comfort, Sport, Normal, Individual) are a group of various things that covers engine, suspension, ACC, steering, lighting etc. etc.

Drive Modes (Eco, Normal, Sport) is engine gearbox only.

Whilst the Driving Profile is remembered for the next time you start the car, the Drive Mode is not. It reverts to Normal.  This is manufacturers emissions thing.

For e.g. Driving Profile is Sport.  Next time you start the car, even though Driving Profile is still in Sport, the Drive Mode has reverted to Normal.

For e.g. Driving Profile is Eco.  Next time you start the car, even though Driving Profile is still in Eco, the Drive Mode has reverted to Normal.

For e.g. Driving Profile is Comfort.  Next time you start the car, even though Driving Profile is still in Comfort, the Drive Mode has reverted to Normal.

For e.g. Driving Profile is Individual.  Next time you start the car, even though Driving Profile is still in Individual, the Drive Mode has reverted to Normal.

that is at least the behaviour of MY17 pre-facelift models, which mine is - 220 Superb MY17.

Brilliant, thanks for going to the effort to explain, this mirrors my experience.

I guess the next question to ask is whether retaining drive mode is something that could be programmed in?

Apparently it's possible, but not straightforward.

It requires someone who understands the hundreds of lines of data in the gateway parameter file, where to look, go to various necessary spots and make specific changes to the dataset.

Then using specialist tools like ODIS or VCP, update/flash the Gateway module.

Make a mistake with the dataset, and u'll stuff up the entire car given how critical and central the Gateway module is.

So for now, I'm simply happy to press 2 or so buttons to reactive the desired driving mode.

I have a 2023 L&K and as you say the drive mode reverts to Nomal every time you re start the car but for a clear indication inset the ambient lights on auto and this can remind you earlier .

Tbf the drive modes in the 23 car are some much better then the old 17 plated one, the sport mode is way more punchier and the normal mode is an all round decent mode to live with.

If you set up "Individual" this should retain the settings.

My 2019 reverts from the configured individual settings each start unfortunately.

It will retain all the settings except for Drive Mode.

Works OK on mine, same engine and MY as OP.

interesting.  i have the same year and engine too.

so ur saying that with ur Individual Mode Driving Profile, if u have the Drive Mode set to "Eco" or "Sport" mode, when u turn the car off and back on, your cluster shows E1, E2, E3...etc etc, or S1, S2, S3 etc etc (Sport Mode) for the gears?

the driving profile will still show that u r in Individual mode.

I need to look at setting driving profile. I think i am setting the driving mode only. I'm using the shortcut button near the gear stick.

Just taken this sorry it's not the best but yes I leave the settings as individual and if needed just use the stick to go into Sport mode or very occasionally rock it sideways to use manual

I know I have 2 warnings one for service and one for Front Assist not Available so if anybody has any clues on the second that would be great. Ta
