Car Safety Radar

Featured Replies

(I know I posted a link from confused.com ....... regarding new for 2025 car safety rules ......... so partly because of that, I mention this very unusual situation).

And genuinely I have a (cropped) 19 second video saved on my smartphone I wish I knew how to put on here to show proof.......

Whilst driving to work this morning I'm approaching the brow of a hill (Green Lane, Ruddington, Notts) and the road bends to the left immediately at the top.

There was a jogger on the pavement on the other side of the road, running towards where I was coming from. I estimate he was 25 to 30 yards away.

I think you can guess where I'm going with this .......... My radar picked up on the fact that there was a person in the line of sight and flashed up a big red 💃 on the dash, with an audible warning, and the system kindly applied the brakes for me.

You can clearly hear the warning on the video ......... oh, and me saying wtf, Lol.

Luckily (I guess) as the person was out of the line of sight within a second or so, the brakes were only lightly applied this time.

Anyone following would likely have wondered what the hell I was applying my brakes for, as obviously the brake lights would have come on also.

Oh, the wonders of modern technology eh!

Thanks for listening ........

When making a post @Tilt click on 'Add files'.

Your PC/ Phone will open up downloads or whatever and you can locate the video. Click on the file and then click OK and it should upload automatically.

Click 'Insert into post' and Bob's your mother's brother. Don't forget max file size is 50Mb.

Hope that helps or at least gets you on the right track 👍

Hopefully this vid I made in 2013 is still valid

@Lee01

Is 50MB for Freedom members Lee ???

I'm sure I have tries to upload a tiny video before and the file size was too big. Currently it is 40.38MB

If the MB size is ok for Resident Members (tight arses, Lol) I may try and get it on here.

@Tilt I want to say yes but I can't remember right now.

Go ahead and try and upload it anyway, you'll get a message telling you if it's over 50Mb 👍

And I changed the safety feature to LOW, after a much more serious intervention before I got used to the car and it's settings.

my new work van has it too, and because its a 2024 build its programmed to come on EVERY time you turn the key.. stop for fuel? its all back on... jump out for 30seconds to unlock a gate and take the keys with you out of habit... all back on again.

i turn it off everytime because

a) the speed warning bings at you for 1kph over the detected speed limit even though the gps speed shows the indicated speed is higher than actual..

b) the evasive steering twice sent me hard right to "avoid collisions" with cars turning left from filter lanes towards oncoming lorries..

c) the autobraking kicked in one damp night because i was approaching the bottom of a hill.. on a motorway...

d) the lane departure tries to either push you into the ditch or onto the wrong side of the road on narrow zroads depending on where it picks up a faded centre line or the ditch..

i hate it all...

Our Mini Countryman has some sort of similar feature and a small numberof times (only 2 or 3) it has randomly triggered with it somehow imagining that there is an object in front of us. Same as you, brown trouser WTF moments.
More often that not the radar cruise option switches itself off for reasons unknown and switch back on (even as normal manual CC) unless the ignition is switches off, a bit of a PITA in a 100mi motorway stretch.
TBH radar 'active' cruise has been a massive disappointment and I'd never spec it on another car.

The Eye-Sight system on the Subaru has been far superior to the radar based mini.

I had a Toyota Aygo with a laser based "panic braking" system and 2 Octavia 3's with a radar based system, TBH they both have similar quirks of false detections of vehicles in front - usually when not steering straight ahead as they seem to look at your trajectory not just simply directly in front.
