Skoda Octavia 2003 1.8T AUM - Speedometer issue (stuck & clicking sound)

Hi everyone,

I have a 2003 Skoda Octavia 1.8T AUM, and I'm experiencing an issue with the speedometer. When I turn the ignition on and the cluster gets power, the speedometer needle stays stuck and moves slightly up and down while making a clicking sound repeatedly. After some time, it suddenly jumps to the maximum speed, then resets and starts working normally.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Could it be a bad ground, faulty speed sensor, or an issue with the instrument cluster itself?

If anyone has experienced this before or knows of any videos or guides on how to fix it, I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks in advance!

I have heard of cars where this would be normal design functionality.

Could be a faulty speed sensor but if its doing it while stationary without engine running maybe the connector at rear of cluster. Is the rev counter working as normal?
