ignition goes off quickly after driver door opening

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. There is one annoying "feature" that i can't seem to find an answer to.

Whenever i leave my house, i need to get out of the car to close the doors to my garage. I put the car in P with ignition ON (or just open the drivers doort to get out), but by the time i am back (~ 5 seconds) the ignition turns itself off, so i need to press the ignition button again.

Is this expected to turn itself off that quickly? I couldn't find any setting for this, or is this something that has to do with Auto start/stop? The weird thing is, when trying to reproduce the issue in the garage, i couldn't. I left the ignition ON, got out of the car, left the drivers door opened and the ignition stayed on for minutes. Does it have to do with the autohold or maybe the fact that it is in an slight angle when getting out of the garage?

Thanks for any input.

Welcome.

How far do you move away from the car?

Is the key in your pocket?

What if you leave it in the car?

The e-Brake should be coming on when the seat belt is unfastened and the door is open so no longer Auto Hold holding it.

It is a nice safety feature that might save lives where a driver gets distracted or careless.

I move away just 0.5 meters. Key is always in my pocket yes. I still can't explain why i couldn't and still can't reproduce it several times afterwards when the car is in the garate. Ignition stayed on...and on.

I thought that if the car was held with autohold on and start/stop active, that the engine would restart as a safety precaution. This is (at least partly) to prevent accidents when opening and working under the bonnet in case the car decided to restart itself. I'll give it a try tomorrow, if I remember.

Is it because you haven't started/moved the car in the garage? Then you move the car out of the garage and that's what causes the ignition to turn off. Maybe try again when you first go to the car when it's not in the garage.

Yeah it's quite the challenge to keep the ignition on. Haven't figured it out yet tbh.

Tried it... Still shuts down fully...

Yes it's meant to do that and that quickly as it's a safety feature to stop the car accidentally running you over when you get out with the engine running.  It seems to work based on distance from the car which is affected by the key being in your pocket.

Probably works off the seat occupancy sensor too....
