MAF Sensor?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Penny for people's thoughts, took my car- Skoda Octavia VRS Estate (2022) into dealership for 30k service and first MOT. Driving fine and no issues at all on arrival at dealership. Service and MOT completed and passed without issue, 10 minutes after MOT, its brought off the ramps and has EML on. Diagnostic says it is MAF sensor, upon further inspection, there is apparently oil in the MAF sensor and must be a leak in seal on the turbo.  Service Manager very keen to stress it is nothing that they have done. New turbo and MAF sensor ordered, and 3-4 days in a hire car. There is 7 days on the warranty so apparently I should be thanking my lucky stars, which I am to a degree, but can't seem to fathom it? Car goes in fine for a service and MOT and now needs a new turbo? Any thoughts from the group? Cheers.

Surely the MAF sensor is far enough upstream (in terms of airflow)  from the turbo to be beyond oil reach? Isn't the MAF just after the air filter?  Do you know what your engine code is, by any chance?

MAP sensor would make more sense, I think?

I am no mechanic, but I am being told it's the MAF sensor. I don't have the engine code. My assumption was that they have done something whilst changing the air filter as part of the service, so it was a bit of a leap to needing a new turbo, which is what I can't fathom. The car was fine when it went in, no EML on etc, and the only intervening event is the MOT and service. Perhaps they are just "having a day out" on the warranty.

The timing seems rather coincidental and the requirement for a new turbo seems a bit extreme, anyhow if they're going to 'gift' you a new turbo then it can only be a bonus for you. I agree with @Breezy_Pete, the MAP sensor is more often the one to become gunked or sooty. I've never yet had to replace the MAF in any car, but my previous car did need the MAP regularly cleaning (using one of the proprietary sensor/throttle body spray cleaners). Regardless of what the dealer does, I'd make sure the MAP is checked.
