Skoda extended warranty and steering wheels

Hopefully I've put this in the right place. While it relates to a Karoq in this particular case, the affected part is fitted to other cars as well.

 

The Karoq in question is a 2021 model year 2.0TSI Sportline.

 

For the second time, the steering wheel touch recognition sensor has gone on the fritz.

 

First time, in February 2021, the car was only three months old and was having a nice long kip in the yard round the back of the dealership while it waited for delivery of a replacement rear diff, so was right at the beginning of the original warranty.

 

A couple of weeks ago Carista picked up another sensor failure (B17B8F2, for what it's worth), and as you'd expect the fault won't clear and reoccurs each time the car is scanned.

 

As far as I'm aware fixing this will require another replacement steering wheel.

 

The car has Skoda's extended warranty until November this year, so while there is no screaming hurry it obviously makes sense to get it fixed before this extended warranty runs out.

 

Provided that the warranty covers it. Now I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't, but then I don't sit in front of a computer screen somewhere with my cursor hovering over the Y or N box.

 

So the actual question - finally - is:

 

Has anybody else on here had a replacement steering wheel fitted under the official All-In-One extended warranty?

 

The dealership says that they will have to do a proper diagnostic  to confirm the fault.

 

I understand how that works, and the reason for it.

 

It's still a little vexatious that they will charge an hour's labour for this diagnostic when it takes thirty seconds - tops - for Carista to do the same thing, but hey ho.

 

If they approve a replacement under the warranty I won't have to cough for this, obvs, but they can't (and I wouldn't expect them to) say for certain that it would be approved before submitting a claim.

 

They aren't being truculent - it's just the way it is.

 

While I can live with the touch sensor gubbins not working because it seems sensible to hold on to the steering wheel while I'm driving, it would be nice to get it fixed for nowt if I can.

 

Sorry for the ramble. I expect most of you haven't got anything better to do at the moment either.

If you're not 'peterziherl' on OBDEleven forum then this was his final reply to his thread - 

 

"Twice they installed a steering wheel with the same defect, only the third time they ordered a new one from the factory (waited two months). Now it is 4,000 km and there are no more errors, and the system works flawlessly."  As at post of  Apr 13, 2022 at 7:20pm.

 

Before that on the thread member 'massimo23; put about the trouble codes in opening post of the thread, including B17B8F2 -

 

"These errors are found in VW TPI and the fix is to replace the steering wheel touch detection unit 5H0959542A with 5H0959542E."

 

So personally I would ask the Dealership if there has been an update on the TPI for the change of part code to let them know you know about this in case you next get someone there that wants to start any run-around about it all as some at these sort of places can.

 

Sorry I've no idea about extended warranties, as always you could go through the T&Cs and the fine print to see what is excluded and might be interpreted as a possible get out of jail for them.  Many agreements even from very large companies that should know better and can easily afford to get things right can have errors and omissions or be badly written so giving possibilities of unexpected interpretation from either (or more) parties and often certainly not written in plain English (or even translated to).

 

I would get the change done ASAP as November will soon roll round and if you need a replacement of the replacement (I don't know only saying) it might be out of warranty period only the part is covered by its own warranty and arguments about garage getting paid by who(m?) for the labour, and scan (do they ever no do a proper diagnostics other than a scan?), and wots a scan from them now £150 or summat like.

I’m not peterziherl, though I’m sure he’s a lovely bloke.

 

I had a few random things replaced under All In on our Tiguan - broken rear light switch and the recirculating flap motor (the flap motor is a common fault but many probably don't notice - the dealer seemed completely bemused by it).   Was never asked to pay a diagnostic fee and if I was I'd expect it to be covered by the warranty if a fault was found.    Did you buy the car from that dealer?  If so, I'd be even more annoyed to be asked to pay.

 

As it's a safety item, I'd be gobsmacked if there's any issue getting it fixed.  On a Merc I had, they fixed an airbag fault under goodwill at 5yrs old.

With hindsight the picture I’ve painted is one of a glass half empty rather than one half full.

 

I’m not expecting to have to pay for the diagnostic because I am expecting the wheel to be replaced (assuming that is the likely fix) under the warranty.

 

It was more a case of asking the question on the off-chance that somebody here had been in a similar situation.

 

In answer to your other question, I did buy the car from this dealership, and that’s one reason for being more optimistic than the tone of the original post might have implied.

 

They’ve done everything you’ve every right to expect of a dealership from day one, despite the car spending days four to eighty-six waiting for a very large and very complicated sub-assembly to be replaced after it made some horrible noises and broke.

 

It wasn’t their fault that the new part took nearly three months to arrive, or that the first steering wheel sensor failure happened just after they’d put it all back together and were about to run it back to our place.

My car is very similar to yours I believe, and way back in Autumn 2021 I was getting annoying error messages saying that the Traffic Assist, Lane Assist and Dynamic Road Signs features were unavailable. The solution at the time was to change the steering wheel controller - which seems to be part of the steering wheel - and so this was changed at the end of November 2021. 

 

That cured the problem at the time, but the error messages returned during the first half of 2023. This time the cure was to implement the Service Campaign 48S5, which was done in June 2023.  

 

The error messages still occur, but are now very infrequent and easily are reset. I bought my car with a factory 5 year warranty, and all the above work was carried out under warranty with no problems,

Your car has bells and whistles that my pauper’s version doesn’t have, the consequence of which is that I haven’t had any dash warnings of impending disaster, fortunately.

 

i just get this recurring when it’s scanned, and as I mentioned earlier, I’m pretty sure it means a new wheel:
