Road noise

Featured Replies

Hi,

I find the new Kodiaq really nice. I have not driven one yet. For you who owns one, how is the road noise level on it, specially 1.5 Petrol and 2 litre Diesel.

Pretty much as you'd expect really. Wouldn't think there are many modern cars that differ much from the norm.

Whats "much"? Could you compare to another brand specifically? Volvo XC60, BMW X3/X5 or VW Tiguan?

no idea about other makes, but even compared to my previous 1.5 petrol, it seems quieter in the cabin.

Probably down to the tyres? I had Pirelli on the old car and the new one is shod with Hankook.

As they are the main contributor to road noise, I would go to a tyre website and search for the tyre and compare road noise levels.

^^^yes, but ..........

A vehicles fitted sound insulation and suspension set up regarding the prevention of noise travelling through the vehicle via the suspension makes a huge difference.

You could have the same tyres but if a vehicle has good sound insulation and (i'm assuming here) suspension bushings that Isolate or prevent the noise travelling both through and into the vehicle, then this vehicles interior noise level will be much lower.

Is the new Kodiaq quiter than the previous one?

I will test one this week, thats the plan..

After replying to this topic, I drove the car with specific regard to road noise. It is really quite quiet. Certainly quiet enough to have a conversation at normal speech volume, even at motorway speeds.

Okay, that sounds good. No rough termac sound entering the vehicle then?

Not a significant amount, no.

Generally the new car is quieter than the outgoing model on all road surfaces.

There must be better sound insulation on the diesel too, as it is no more noisy than the 1.5 petrol it replaced.

My 2.0 TSI Sportline isn't at all noisy on the road, perhaps it's the tyres it came with? The demo had Hankook tyres, but mine came with Continental Sport Contact, which I think are quieter. My previous car, the awful RAV4 Hybrid, was a lot noisier with narrower tyres.
