Massive parasitic draw

Featured Replies

I have a 2014 Skoda Superb 2 hatchback with a 2 litre Tdi engine 140. For some months now the car has been suffering from a large parasitic draw of up to 7 amps!!! If I pull fuses it would indicate that the circuit through which the loss is going is protected by Fuse 7 in the under bonnet fusebox. (Version with 30 fuses). My owners' manual shows that Fuse 7 is not assigned. However, I've seen elsewhere that this circuit covers the power supply for terminal 15 (ignition on). Has anyone out there got any ideas here? I'm having to charge the car every couple of days. I sent the car in to an auto electrician who reported that the leak is intermittent and the vehicle is waking up from sleep at irregular intervals and draining the battery. If I can't find a fix I'm thinking of resorting to a battery isolator. Any help would be gratefully received.

VIN or reg plate would allow me to investigate car-specific circuits and fuse allocations. Owners manuals try but often fail to keep up with all the variants.

Hi, please see this video: https://youtu.be/lRcj1fQcWwU?si=gxHq6XfSBAepTPpw I think it's the best one available on the net. All additional relevant information can be found in the description. It worked for me some years ago.

If you still cannot find the culprit, you may need an infrared camera to find heath sources in the car that produce heath even when the car is not been used for some hours. Once found the module that is producing the heath it may well be replaced by a new one.

Btw, my current draw issue was caused by the boot light with the torch and itś charging device.

Many thanks for the link to the video. I hadn't thought of using an infrared camera and I'll now check the boot lights.

Many thanks Breezy_Pete That would be great as I don't have access to any wiring diagrams. My VIN is TMBBE73TXF9006711 I'm very grateful for your help

So there are 2 fuse no.7s in the under-bonnet fuse box, one is a strip fuse, on the front of the box, shown as not assigned in my info.

The other, a 40 Amp blade-type fuse is shown as supplying the X contact relief relay. If that relay is sticking on when it should be off, that may explain the large current draw, if something that should be switched off by it is staying on.

That relay is in position 5 of the "relay holder A under onboard control unit" (also known as BCM, in cabin generally in front of driver's right knee in RHD cars).

Thank you for that. I did mention to the auto electrics company that had the car for a week whether it could be a relay and they said no. This is, as you know, an intermittent fault and in a former life we did have instances where relays would chatter or turn on and off at various times. Can I test this relay - and if so how? - or do I just buy a replacement? Many thank for your interest in this annoying problem.

Find it, read the big number off the top of it or the part number on the side of it. See what prices you can find for 2nd hand and new, and decide which to try by substitution.
