Octavia VRS 2002 engine management light

Hi,

This has been my first real problem with the car apart from 4 x ignition coils. I have owned the car from new and it is just approaching 29k miles. The engine management light has been on for a day, the book says emissions and car performance may be reduced. I have gave it a blast and performance is still top notch, also fuel consuption seems better ?????

any idea's

I have this every once in a while. In my case it is one of the temperature sensors who registers a value that is outside its range, which just triggers the light to come on. After a week of driving (i.e. re-starting engine), the light will go out. However, it could be a lot of things, so I'd advice you to find someone with a VAG COM and get the fault code read.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a related problem that maybe someone on here could help with.

Three weeks ago my engine managment light came on, the previous evening I'd driven quite fast (only for a few moments at very high speed on an dual carriageway just for a quick blast ...ahem sorry Mr Plod.. ) anyway the car was due for a service so I booked it in and got the light investigated, the skoda dealer said it was needing some adjustments to the cams or camshaft, which they carried out however they couldn't get the light to go out (!), I'd informed them previously that it had an APR remap, but that the light had never been on since I'd owned the car. They sent me off with the car which I've just used for a holiday to France -2200miles later :eek: and the light is still on, my problem is should I protest more to get an answer on why its staying on as a) its annoying and if another fault develops I ain't going to know about it until its perhaps too late.

Any advice - have people with remap had similar problems??

I purchased a serial lead from Gendan, downloaded VAG-Com from ross-tech.com and came up with a fault code 17704 engine mapped temperature sensor. Anyone know this sensors location? and is this a comman defect. I have cleared the fault at the moment using the software and laptop, but need to be ready in case it returns.

Well i had the same problem,

the light came on and would not reset,

Nobody could sort it not Even Local vw Tuner in kirkaldy and the dealer x2

plus local specialist,

I was told i would need a new ECU £700 new

as you can expect i fell to the floor in horror,

Some kind people on this fine forum sugested REVO

I e-mailed Them with details of fault code ect,

The result was that when i had a 7 day trial APR put on the car 2 years previously

and never got it re installed permenantly, and if APR dont get it removed in time

after 2000 ignition switches or so it screws up and tells the ECU theres somthing

wrong.

The garage who will remain nameless who applied APR kept quite and said an ecu was needed.

REVO sorted my ecu, got it mapped at the same time so killed two bird with one stone

Your problem might not be like mine so check fault codes, mine was (check sum code error)

Quinten, is the sensor that you referred to:

cooling system?

air temp?

oil temp?

Which one do I buy or is there only one.

Air temp iirc. But why buy a new one? I just said above that it is due to it reading a value outside (to what it considers) its safe boundary. That doesn't mean that it is broken, it just means that sometimes (and this is very infrequent, like once every 6 months) it throws the engine management light.

Quinten, as you probably guessed I am not greatly familiar with modern car systems. I am great with ships and submarines as I teach the RN Ships control systems and sensors (for which there is a temp sensor for everything). I am very greatful for you're excellent knowledge and experience and as you seem quite clued up on the VRS sensors, is there anywhere I can get a list of sensors and locations. What is iirc air temp?

I'm as clued up as my friendly Skoda techie is... I do not know what sensor is where, nor do I know for certain that the sensor that activates my light is the air temp sensor. I just seem to remember it like that.

My problem goes away after a week or so... if yours doesn't then it may be something completely different.

17704 is referring to the engine cooling system temperature. First cause of action would be to replace the sensor which is situated in the coolant piping close to the passenger side of the cylinder head. The original is black and the revised part is green.

The inlet air temperature sensor is part of mass air meter, which is in the ducting just after the air filter housing.

this 17704 error had it @ the beginning of the year .....

the car would start with the default setting for the outside temp ... and in the winter the engine would stop after a couple of sec after start. i had to acelerate it a bit just to get it warm after that it would run fine

i did change the temp sensor under warranty but after a day or two it came back ....

the car was remapped and the remapping company solved it ....

it was a software error .

The dual temperature sender is on the right hand side of the engine and is circled in red in the photo. The arrow indicates the release clip for it. This is the unmodified (black) sender which can cause problems by sending incorrect information to the ECU. The modified sender (PN: 059 919 501A -

Just for further knowledge, and to aid the site search , the coolant sensor part pictured earlier in the thread is also known as both the G2 and G62 sensor(s).
