Does vRS come with airbags in the front seats..

Featured Replies

...as standard?

I just noticed airbag tags on my front seats yesterday. Need to be aware cos of kiddies...

If there are tags on the seat it has them.

My MK I has them so i would be pretty sure the MK II does too.

Cheers.

Are these what are considered "curtain" or is that something else? Just wondering if I managed to get another freebie extra... :)

Pretty sure they're curtain air bags :D

Chris

I think the curtain airbags are extra..the seat ones are standard (4 airbags as standard I am sure..driver, passenger and 2 front seats

OK, I *think* these are considered "Side Impact" airbags. From the website, all new Octavias are fitted with them. I think curtain airbags are something else that come from around the frame of the doors.

Ah well - thought I'd blagged something unknowingly for a bit there...

Curtains are not the ones in the seat, the ones in the seat are for side impact. Curtains come down from the roof lining. If you have a child seat in the car I believe you shouldn't use a rear facing (one with the baby facing the rear of the car) behind a front seat equiped with a side airbag as this will ahve very nasty effects as would putting them in the passenger seat in a similar chair.

MK1 RS didn't have side airbags as standard....not sure if it became an option for the last fe MK1 RS'.

Ah that's what was confusing me - the Mondeo has curtain air bags as standard so I assumed that these included the ones in the seats, but they must just be the ones mounted in the pillars. AFAIK (and according to the manual) there is no problem with mounting a baby seat in the rear of the car in any of the three seats. The only seat where it shouldn't be mounted is in the front passenger seat :D

Should have clarified my MK I isn't a VRS, but an elegance.

Also IIRC,a front seat airbag also inflates behind the seat slighly, so in the even of a rear facing child seat being behind the seat there may be a risk. If it was my kid I wouldn't take that risk, no matter how small.

So where would you put your child in a car filled with air bags :P:rofl:

Incidentally, the Mondeo will only trigger the air bags where it registers people are in the seats so with the baby behind the passenger seat, and the passenger seat being empty the baby will be safe from the passenger front seat airbags....

Fortunately, both my kids are old enough not to be in rear-facing seats and should be in no more danger from the airbags than me and Mrs D.

In the centre of the rear bench chris :P

In the centre of the rear bench chris :P

But surely if the front seat airbags inflate "behind the seat slightly" then the child will get hit twice if it's positioned in the centre ;)

Chris

No because they are only on the outside of the seats you literal ******* :P:P:) (edit: thats a joke just so you know)

I know wht you are saying mind, but hey I think we answered the opriginal question and are now going off to tangent land.

I specced the curtain airbags. You get 6 in total. Located below the headlining at each pillar. The side airbags from the seats do not extend far enough out in the event of inflation to come in contact with a rear facing child seat in the rear of the car. The manufacturers are very careful about this.

Also if a child was in the front passenger seat in a rear facing car seat (with the front airbag off of course), the side airbag would only extend far enough to touch the edge of the car seat which would be held tightly in position by the seat belt pre-tensioners which activate simultaneuously. If the car seat uses ISOFIX, the story could be different I suppose.

I'm pretty sure that only certain airbags activate in the event of an accident. Its not a case of 10 airbags going off simultaneously unless the impact is from more than one direction.

It isnt' that all 10 go off, and it's good to hear they have sorted it i just remember the first car with side airbags had kid seat warnings.

If you have curtain airbags on you Octy II vRS (they are optional) there will be a tag with 'AIRBAG' stamped on it on the three pillars in the cabin.
