MK3 Octavia - replacing MIB1 multimedia player - is it coded?

Featured Replies

I want to replace the MIB1 multimedia player (i.e. the bit in the glovebox) on my mk3 Octavia - is this coded to the car? All the replacements I have seen seem to have a serial number starting S7E, but elsewhere on the internet it suggest that it should start SK7.

Yes, it coded; yes, it can be upgrade, but it will probably need a new MIB2 unit and a new screen, then an hour at the local Skoda dealer to remove Component Protection.

I'm not actually looking to upgrade the unit - just to swap like for like. Can I do that without a code?

No, Component Protection will need to be removed by a dealer or an independent with online access to the Skoda servers.

So would removing component protection be done on both the multimedia player and the main unit, so either of them could be changed and still work with the other?

Yes, the MIB1 multimedia unit in your Mk3 Octavia is coded to the car, so simply swapping it out with another unit won't work straight away. You'll need to get the replacement component protection removed and recoded using ODIS (dealer software) or a specialist with the right tools.

Regarding the serial numbers, the "S7E" and "SK7" prefixes might indicate different regional versions or hardware revisions. It’s best to match the part number exactly with your current unit to avoid compatibility issues.

If you're upgrading from MIB1 to MIB2, you’ll also need a compatible screen, USB port, and possibly a new gateway module. If you’re just replacing a faulty MIB1 unit, try to get one from the same model year to make coding easier.

Hope that helps – let us know how you get on! 👍

The problem is that the quality of output from CDs (and SD cards) is poor - sounds tinny and no bass unless it's turned up. Not all CDs as bad as others. However, the radio sounds fine and music via bluetooth also - I'm not even sure of the unit is faulty. I was thinking of buying a cheap one to swap out to see if it made any difference. I think it's going to be too much just to eliminate which component is the issue.

If the radio and Bluetooth sound fine then the audio amp part is OK.

When you say not all CDs are as bad that suggests to me that the CD/SD part is also OK.

Has this problem appeared recently or has it always sounded like this?

Have you tried playing around with the audio and equaliser or bass/treble settings?

you should talk to Pawel Pab567

I dont think anyone on these forums has more knowledge on the infotainment system. I think he was the first to recode the skoda units.

I think he can supply you with an upgraded unit but you would need to talk to him.

Suggest making sure you are on the latest firmware for your MIB1 system and then enabling up Skoda Surround on your system. Sound quality will be much improved.
