Brake peddle knock

Featured Replies

Picked up my 12 month old Sportline plus yesterday, really pleased with it now I'm getting to know the car and the differences to my old 2017 Sportline.

One thing I have noticed, which I didn't seem to hear on my test drive and my 50 mile journey home yesterday, is when I come to a complete stop and the auto hold comes on, as I come off the brake peddle sometimes, not all the time, there's a faint knock. It's only after the auto hold has engaged and never when braking whilst travelling.

Is this normal as can't remember hearing anything on my old Sportline?

Or is it the dreaded "back to the dealers within a few days"?

It’s not uncommon unfortunately. Someone else posted asking the same thing in the last couple of months. Something seems to be sticking a little in the brake pedal mechanism. Doesn’t seem to get any worse, doesn’t seem to have any effect and after a while you’ll likely forget it’s there.

Curiously I had a 2018 Kia Sportage from new and that developed the exact same thing about 6 months old too.

My 2023 does this sometimes from brand new. My 2016 never did. Something is different about the brake pedal system, not sure what. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about

Thanks Both, TBF it was my initial thought that maybe there was a difference to my old car, mostly because I'd expect it to be there all the time if it was a problem, bonus is I still have 2 years warranty on the car.

Hi, fortunately mine isn't that loud, yet!! But could you explain this a bit more, don't understand the "having to move DSG to N" bit.

Cheers

Auto Hold lets leave brake pedal on longer reds, but gives this annoying knocking

without Auto Hold car will start move on leave brake pedal, to prevent that, i move DSG lever D->N

as additional benefit, load to engine decreases and consumption drops from 1.5-1.9 to 0.8-1.1 l/h

Mines going back to the dealers with this issue in a few weeks. I've also got an issue with the self leveling lights so not a wasted journey

Drove mine yesterday, and it didn't knock once, actually forgot about it at one point! Looks like it's going to be one of those things!!

So drove it yesterday, not one single knock, drove it again today and the knock was back!!🫤

Tried your trick of having the auto hold off, which worked a treat, only problem was the handbrake doesn't seem to come on automatically so it needs manual putting on so the car isn't resting on the gearbox.

It's going in for an oil change soon at my local dealer so I'll ask them to look at it.

i forget about it because it's my "automatic" habit from previous cars

before leave car, while keeping brake pedal pressed, move lever to P, activate handbrake, release brake pedal

I picked up my Nov 2023 car at the same time as Nick & mine has always done this clicking when you release the pedal.

Now that I've read this thread, it's getting louder and louder in my head each time it happens... 🤪

I've booked my car in for a minor service and the car to be changed to fixed serving with Skoda, I asked about it whilst on the phone, they said its a known "characteristic" not a problem but will look anyway,

Sounds to me it will be a thing to live with!!

I leave autohold and I do not get the knocking, although its release is "harsh". I know in the adaptations/coding there was one option for "early/late" release, I tried that and x-mas tree lighted up I had everything on failure ... return to the setting the car came in, errors gone.

As yesman wrote above, take it or leave ... can't make it all the way we want! 😁

Since years, I am doing a variation of your process: arrive at destination, level in N, engage handbrake, then lever to P, off. I do it so I make sure there is no "binding" left in the transmission, which is useful especially with some older cars.

As an added tranquillity, this way the brakes hold the car, not the gearbox.

Consider that the parking pawl is not the greatest strenght in an autobox...

Now obviously my experience is from "normal" boxes, never had a DSG before, but I believe the basics are the same ....
