How to spot the 1.9 from 2.0 TDI ??

Featured Replies

Probably a daft question, but what are the blatantly obvious ways to identify each ?

I have seen a few about, but the tail badges don't seem to give much away...

Ta :)

I don't think there are TBH, surprised me thought they might of added a 2.0TDi Badge on the rear like VW & Audi's

The 2.0 has a red I on the TDI logo and a 6 speed gear box, I don't believe the 1.9 has either of these.

This follows the usual VAG convention of having more red letters on the more powerful models - expect the 170hp model to have a red D & I.

Not sure about the gearbox as I have the DSG in my 1.9 - which has 6 ratios.

 best get the permanent marker out then..

ok you win RE the DSG, but on the manual boxes you can get the 5 speed only in the 1.9 and the 6 speed only in the 2.0.

The VRS should just have a red T, D and I

I think there is gonna be vRS for the pd170

Will they bother putting a TDI badge on the vRS at all? I think not. Think of the VW golf TDI GTI, the only giveaway was the red I on the boot (and the puff of black smoke  )

If they fit the 170PD to other Octavias (Elegance, L&K etc) It will be a TDI.

Talking about coonfusing badges, VW will add to that, the current GTi, will be the GT, and the uprated 220BHP golf will be the new GTi. Does this mean that the current 200 BHP Golfs will be rebadges at service from GTi to GT ?

I was under the impression with the Octy the 140 had the red i on th badge.

The 230 bhp engine will be used on the Audi S3, Seat Leon Cupra. If it is made VW will use the engine in the limited edition Golf GTi Anniversary, rather than the standard Gti

Badges..... Badges..... Wee don't need no stinkin Badges...... Says the man in charge at skoda........

You mean the GT TDI ;)

No I mean the GTI TDI with the 150 engine.:P

The GT TDI was the 130 was it not?

From what I can make out the GT TDI went from 110 TDI through 115 and 130 PD to 150 PD, and the GTI TDI PD is an aniversary version.

The Mk4 Golf GTi was never sold as a diesel

The GT TDI was 150bhp. It may well have been available in 130 bhp though. No such thing as as a GTI TDI in the MkIV Golf as said already.

The Mk4 Golf was sold as GTi diesel. I had one, The GTi anniversary addition could be purchased in 150 PD guise. The red I on the GTi was a UK sourced car, diesel or petrol. silver badge means import.

I think s3 is gonna have 2.0tfsi with 272 hp. I guess there is no much difference between normal 2.0 tfsi.

I know a few people that own or have owned a Mk 4 Golf GTI with the 150 PD engine in. I specifically remember driving a black in the TDI guide and it was very nice as I remember;) .

Fair enough. You learn something new everyday. must be like hens teeth tho.

Seriously, they aren't any different looking from the petrol variant, the only thing to look for is the puff of smoke and the red I but that could mean anything in reality.

The GT TDI is much more common with the 130 and (I think) 115 PD engines.

I have a sneaking suspicion that they made a PD150 GT though so we're all right and all wrong at some point:P .

I thought the red i indicated the one that had the 1.8T as opposed to the 2.0 engine on the GTI as the original GTI with the 2.0 engine was a bit of a wet fish.

I got my data on which models where which from the parkers guide list under the reviews section if anybody wants a nosey at what was on offer. :)

Nope , VW weren't consistent with the badging.

Someone I worked with had a 1.8t GTI with all silver badging and that was a UK sourced car bought from a main dealer down the road.

Do they do an SDI in the new Octy? ;)
