17in vs 16in alloys

Featured Replies

Not driven an Octy with 16in wheels I guess this question falls to someone

who has driven both. Do the 17in alloys produce more road noise than the

16in wheels. I have the 17in on my Octy but was wondering if the 16in might

be better.

Try changing the tyres. The b/stones are very noisy

I've driven both, the 17' are on Conti's and the 16's were on Bridgestones.

The 17's were slightly quieter but thats entirely down to the tyres.

Keep the 17's mate, they look the dogs.

I've got b/stones on my 17's and the racket is driving me insane. BUT, they look soooo much better than 16's.

17's fitted as standard to the vRS but 18's fitted to mine and the ride comfort is exemplary so I think previous comments are right in suggesting that the correct tyre choice makes a difference.

Just as a footnote, I have been looking at different wheels and I must say that if I were to change (but I don't think I will) that 19's look absolutely terific but I'm not sure how the ride would suffer. I have also been told that it's possible to fit 20" rims to the OctyII  , but your bum would be pretty sore with the tyres on those.!

Cheer's lads, the 17" do look great and I will be keeping them. I have the conti contacts with no problems just asking questions...... Questions..... and more.....

Keep 'em coming, that's what this site is for

With the TDi Sport, I have found that the Dunlop SP's that I have fitted are slightly noisier than the SP's that were fitted to the 2.0 FSi estate.

Could also be down to the Sports suspension but much prefer the 17" wheels.

Don't forget the 17's are 20mm wider than the 16's. That will affect the noise characteristics of the tyres.

IMO the conti's are the best of the bunch.

If all else fails, turn the stereo up!
