Hi guys, my soon to be acquired mk4 vrs doesnt have a spare wheel. Can it fit a full sized spare 19” altair wheel + tyre? Or does it only have room for space saving spare wheel 18” + foam.

I can find a used 19” rim plus tyre for just over £250 but not sure if it would fit under boot floor.

I’m not 100% sure but my 4.5 came with a space saver and I don’t think a full size 19” wheel with tyre would fit in the well.

Looks like £200 for the UK. Don’t know where you are. For my market (NZ) the spare is standard.

Mine came with a thin spacesaver spare and toolkit rather than a full size wheel.

Before you buy from the dealer though I'd suggest getting the part number then having a look on eBay. I did this for my previous Superb and our current Fabia which both came with inflation kits. I picked up the correct spare wheel kits in both instances for around £60-80 (I'm afraid my memory can't get any more specific than that) with both of them having been taken out of cars that were being traded in and not having been used. We live in Sheffield and I travelled down to Bedford for the Superb kit and Spalding in Lincolnshire for the Fabia kit so even with fuel factored in they were both still under the £100 mark.

A full size 225-40-19 will fit but it is a bit of a squeeze to put it in or get it out. I did not like the weedy little space saver so I chose an 18 inch wheel with 225-40-18 tyre for ease of fitting. The 225-40-18 is 637 mm diameter the 225-40-19 is 663 mm diameter, but the difference is insignificant. The next issue is the Jack and wheel nut kit and how to mount it. I bought a second hand package for an Octavia 2 and the works well. Hope this helps.

Interesting to know that. To be honest having a spare option was important to me but the reality is you should hardly ever use it so a space saver does make sense to me especially since I doubt the sub woofer would fit with a full size wheel?

I am off to France for a week in June and I am thinking about picking up this kit from eBay.

It seems like a bargain to me.

The only thing I can see with that is that it doesn't come with the securing screw that keeps the spare wheel in place in the wheel well (The wheel is obviously smaller than the space it fits into so you can remove it) With the proper kit you get a large bolt with a handle on one end that you screw into the floor of the car to secure the spare wheel. Then you also get a foam insert that fits into the spare wheel and holds your jack, wheel brace, centre cap and wheel nut cover removal tools and locking wheel nut. This also supports the boot floor above it.

So i had one of these square foam kits already that came with the car, i trimmed the bottom foam nubs so that it sits flat

Mine also came with the space saver as standard, and I'm fine with it. It gets you out of a mess but also makes sure you get the punctured wheel fixed quickly, who wants to ride around with a space saver on for longer than necessary? With a full size matching spare there's a greater risk of sticking the punctured one in the boot and forgetting about it!
