Car Battery coding tool

Featured Replies

Yes should be fine to drive, I would just keep start-stop disabled in the meantime though. I'm sure there's thousands and thousands of VAG cars out there with replaced batteries that haven't been coded and are running seemingly fine.

I believe there may be some misunderstanding in translation - Brand / manufacturer code is totally unimportant.

Fleece/EFB, battery capacity and an alteration to the last digit of the existing battery serial number is the ONLY relevant data when replacing the battery.

I would not say totally unimportant. I am not the manufacturer of the ECU-unit/ battery monitoring control unit J367 (;-)) in my model...... .
new: AGM-> vlies
old: EFB -> efb

Yes. It is totally correct. Start-Stop has to be disabled. If you change from EFB to AGM with the same capacity(!)/ 59 Ah in my case, i would change the battery type. Cause AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) is different (lifetime etc) from EFB.....
Yes, I think so to like you. But i wanted to make it correctly. In my case i have nearly 20 Ah more. 59 Ah are too small. EFB batteries are not used/ should not be used with cars which use Start-Stop-function (VAG has also wrote it down in their technical documentation-> no joke :-)!). You can search in the internet. This is because of the electrical starter impulse (high current in A!)....and so on..... .

Thanks all

One thing to note, I know Tanya batteries is a favourite on this forum but before ordering I noticed they have alot of negative Google reviews when things go wrong so ordered from Amazon instead. Just something you may want to be aware of.

Is the obdeleven only good for 1 year? After that you have to keep buying licence to get any use of it?

Only the plan is good for a year, which is for the coding/adapations. You can still use it to diagnose faults/live data once the plan expires.

I changed mine about 3 years ago. Like for like AGM to AGM never had it coded and have never had a problem. Yes the start stop doesn't work for a while after changing and the normal ABS and ESP lights but they go away after driving for 10 mins.

Are you meant to put the grey plastic cap back in after install as shown in this video at 4:30, thought that was for transit only.

It's a ventilation hole. Best that is removed.

Yes definitely remove it as @varaderoguy said. Lead acid batteries produce hydrogen gas when charging.

If you want to be really fancy, attach a little bit of rubber hose and tuck away to divert the gases. (AWAY from the engine! and not in a cavity where the gas can collect) Overkill though, there's enough airflow in the engine bay when everything is running that the gases will get vented quickly enough.

As you describe, this is certainly the frightening truth. Nevertheless, everyone's dashboard lights will certainly light up ;-). Some of them will only go out when you have recoded. Ultimately, you won't have any problems if you use the same size L1 or L2 on the Scala. But with the start-stop function, an EFB is installed ex works. For whatever reason! In any case, as far as I know, it should now be an AGM, as most people here install. I bought one from the DIY store when I was in need, without ordering on the internet. Luckily he had some from Bosch, which is ultimately like the corresponding Varta Dynamic.

But without correct recoding EFB to AGM etc., the service life of your (technically & physically) battery will certainly be shortened. Also the charging times from L1->L4 (as in my case) are definitely different from the control unit, with an increase in capacity of almost 20%.
