Engine help , cracked mount.

Featured Replies

I have been looking for an engine for a few months now, found one yesterday and the breakers have noticed a crack on a mounting point. They have offered money off (£50) but my question is ….. is it actually fixable or not. Has any experience with this and been repairs successfully ?

CXXB engine cost £1600. From Audi a3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

There looks to be two cracks that I can see - the obvious one on the mounting eyebolt section, but is there another in the angle where the mount meets the block?

I'd say that engine block has received a seriously hard knock and suggest rejection.

I recall a taxi driver friend of my father buying a replacement engine, externally it appeared completely unmarked, but turned out to be scrap as internal castings had been shattered by an impact on the crank pully.

Its either been removed badly or been in a fair crash. I doubt thats repairable and I personally wouldn't risk it. There may well be hairline cracks that you can't see.

£50 off is no where near it either. I reckon its worth £50 for scrap.

Try https://www.trents.co.uk/ Might be worth an email as they seem to have a fair range of skoda/vw engines.

Meant to add why a new engine? Is yours not repairable?

My 2016 Scout has the exact same issue. The mount point on the block has shattered. Block is essentially useless. Was quoted £2500 for a replacement CRMB engine and £2500 for removal of they old engine and the fitting of the new engine.

Managed to save up enough for the block. Need to wait a further year to save for the the cost of fitting.

@WorkHorse what was the cause of your damage, collision?

They want to offer a whole lot more than that.

Could potentially get it welded but it will always be pretty weak.

If the rest is good I'd offer maybe 40% of what they are worth.

So firstly the independent dealership failed to reset the engine back from the service position after the timing belt was changed. Then when I was coming back from a hike with my family a black range rover run me off a single track road with passing place, travelling in the opposite direction. When I served to avoid it the car car mounted the embankment and hit a large stone, which apparently shattered the engine mount on the block. Personally I don't see how as when I checked the vehicle afterwards the engine underbody shield was still instant and there was no apparent leaks from the engine. It was only after a few weeks that the coolant levels significantly dropped. I topped it up but within a week it was almost back to zero again. That's when I removed they underbody shield to check the engine and discovered the serpentine drive belt was rubbing hard against the radiator hose. Took it you a local garage and was advised about the engineer mount point on the chassis has shattered off and the mount point on the block had been ripped out as well.

If it was me I'd have a go at replacing myself, what is the worse that can happen its already damaged? You just have to read up what is involved.

Never done a gearbox out clutch replacement job before but did that earlier this month albeit a smaller citigo but apparently they are harder due to the lack of room.

Sod that broken engine tho, I wouldn't be paying 4 figures in that state
