Noise issue: rustling sound from left side while driving

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I’m dealing with a really annoying issue and could use some help.

There’s a crawling or rustling sound coming from the left side of me when I’m in the driver’s seat, around ear level. I’m having trouble pinpointing the exact source, but it seems like it might be coming from either the driver’s side door, the passenger door, or somewhere in between.

The sound often happens when the car is shaking a bit – like on bumpy roads or uneven surfaces – which makes it even harder to track down.

Has anyone experienced something similar and managed to fix it?

I’ll try to upload a sound recording soon to give a better idea of the noise.

Thanks in advance!

The sound I'm hearing seems like creaking to me; is that the one you're referring too? If so, I think it's dry suspension or steering bushes (mine made a similar but much louder noise last year, that was steering bushes).

Hmm, I'm not entirely sure it's them. But I’ll definitely double-check. It sounds more like the noise is coming from somewhere between the front passenger door and the driver’s door, roughly at ear level.

I noticed yesterday that when I made quick left turns, the sound appeared.
For a while, I thought it might be the door seals being dry, but lubricating them didn’t make any difference.

You’ve probably checked this but is there something in the sunglasses holder sliding around? Or maybe the storage bin between the seats.

I keep phone charging cables in there and at time the they vibrate in the sides. First time had me guessing for ages.

Was going to suggest the sunglasses holder too. Had a rattle last week that was driving me mental. I was adamant it was coming from the passenger door pocket or glove box, the Mrs was adamant it was coming from my side of the car. Eventually realised it was the sunglasses. It's mad how only hearing it in my left ear really screwed with my perception of where the sound was coming from!

It's hardly the umbrella in the door is it? I thought my car door developed a rattle a while ago and after checking everything I couldn't resolve it.

One rainy day I had the umbrella out and suddenly realised the sound was gone! I shook the umbrella and that was the noise I had been hearing inside the door.
