Wheel bearing or bigger problem?

Featured Replies

I'm getting a humming sort of noise from passenger side front when I get to 90km/h and above. Could this be a wheel bearing issue? The car was serviced less than a year ago and the noise if definitely located in the front corner. Timing belts were done in that service too. So I can't see it being an engine/transmission problem. The only other thing I can think of is a bad CV joint but I'm not hearing anything at low speeds or when I'm turning.

Best thing to do would be to get the car up in the air and spin the wheel to hear if the wheel is rattling

My 2020 has the same issue, previous to me buying it the owner had it in Skoda for a replacement wheel bearing and either they're made of cheese and its gone again, or its something else. I'm currently just turning my music up louder! lol!

Bad bearing could be heard from lower speeds (from 70 km/h and sound changes with rise of speed).

+twisting of steering wheel (=loading of both bearings) can help catch the guilty one. If it's bearing at all.

Pity, but it's "normal" for Octy mk3 front bearings to work just 100k...160k km, plenty of warranty cases.

If its a droning sound that changes with speed and gets better/worse when turning wheel I would suspect bearing on its way out. Have done a few on Fabia and Octavia. They didn't have any play or feeling of roughness with wheel off ground and they past MOT but definite droning noise. I ran them for a while as I didn't have time but I changed them as soon as I could as I didn't want to risk them failing completely plus if they aren't replaced they tend to heat up and can wear out faster and wore case scenarion seize if really bad.

It Is possible that it's the tyre tread. I had this with previous models of Octavia

Undertray - its missing some bolts and flapping in the breeze and making a humming noise
