66 plate Citigo Monte Carlo: gearbox and clutch actuation.

Featured Replies

Wife's car, owned from new, 22K miles. Very gently driven etc. full service history.

The car has the rattley clutch noise, goes quiet when pedal depressed, rattles when pedal is up in neutral standing still.

I've been told on here "they all do that Sir" and I seem to recall shortly after buying it it arrived, and is always there.

It irritates, and a new lighter rattle has joined in pulling away in first at low revs and accelerating for about 3 secs. New noise not apparent in 3rd/4th/5th., arrived about 3 weeks ago.

You cannot hear it whist driving along.

So, two questions please

1

Was all this rattle fixed on the face lift of the Citigo? If so, what plate would be on the noise-free car?

2

Second new additional rattle; any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I'd go with "they all do that" and unless you want to go shelling out wasting money on supposed "preventative maintenance" ( assuming the clutch isn't seeming like its about ready to be done), there are threads on this and up forums if you want to search

Thank you for your reply (at least I got one!).

Have come to the same conclusion, just drive it and remember it is a budget car.

Had a Toyota iQ before which was miles up the quality ladder, but not crash proof...

Late reply but agree they all do it.My 43K Monte Carlo does it and so did my new Sport i bought back in 2013 did it from new also.

I had a VW Passat as a company car years ago and off the transporter the gearbox rattled.

Three gear boxes later , numerous masthead flywheels and a few clutches later still not resolved.

Plus one on the 'they all do that sir'. We have the exact same model and year Citigo with almost identical mileage and it has had the rattle for as long as I remember. Oyrs has been serviced by my trusted mechanic ever since the warranty expired and he has never mentioned it as a potential issue.

Thank you all for your replies.

It is the only really irritating parts of this great little car, so we shift gear from 1st to start, revs to 3rd, rev to 5th cutting out those gearbox rattles.

Strange that VW released these cars with this fault? (and have never fixed the problem).

Other irritants:

The clip-on info screen keeps on dropping out and needs a good sharp tap to wake(connect) it up for the info such as mpg etc.

The clonking of the rear suspension over undulating harsh road surfaces.

Poor hill climbig performance...

Rest is great!

My mechanic lubricated the spring mounting and that sorted it. Just some silicon spray IIRC. We needed new front ball joints at the same time, roads here are bad.

Get the electric version 🙂 I cannot justify the extra purchase cost to myself for such a low use car as ours, but the E-UP (same car) I tested climbed our Welsh hills waaaaay better.
