Potential EV virgin

Probably caused by a difference in voltage between your properties.

Yes exactly - a friend who charged his Tesla at my house once just using a 3 pin plug commented on the high voltage. I think he mentioned it was around 250v.

My car doesn't give me that info but the kW rate suggests it must be around that.

Be careful installing solar (or any micro generation) with 250v, definitely something to mention when getting quotes for solar. As solar generates excess, the inverter will rise voltage above grid voltage in order to export. This over tolerance range may cause your home electrics to trip or behave weirdly.

Tolerance for an electricity supply is 230 volts -6%, +10%, which gives an allowed voltage range of 216 volts to 253 volts.

Some charge point may also be 30 amp instead of 32 amp. I was getting 7 kW with my old Podpoint unit that was installed in 2017. It was only able to deliver 30 amps. Tesla are very good at providing these detailed info.

Thanks - not really thinking of installing solar anytime soon. My roof faces the wrong way apparently and the cost/payback time doesn't really stack up at the moment considering I may move house at some point in the next couple of years.

It does a bit but it is potentially true if you're in the 62% tax bracket. My car is on Octopus EV too and if I punch a wage of £110k for example into our configurator then I am getting a similar price on a low spec ID3.

There won't be any deposit.

If you are in that tax bracket then it is more or less a complete no brainer to do it as long as you can live with an EV.

I'm enjoying mine so far but I have the Superb as backup for long journeys etc (we do these quite frequently) - I wouldn't countenance an EV as my only car at this stage but many will find it works for them if they never/rarely do long journeys.

Yes confirmed no deposit today. Shant get into specifics over salaries here but i am a higher rate tax payer, plus Scotland bonus taxes.

We do need to try car to check and we’d only be signing up for 3yr. So should the deals turn sour we’re not in for the long term. Work colleague has an id4 and other than niggles is happy.

Were the same, likely to move in the roi period stops us putting in solar/battery. Neighbour has and is very happy.

The big & the small of it.

Mini not an option or I think the Mrs would push for it. Allegedly mini has moved production to China and now won’t guarantee prices or delivery times so the lease firm is refusing to offer for now

@Aspman @ MINI Dealers now they just show the cars and take orders and Deliver. You buy from MINI UK.

The showroom was empty when i was in other than receptionist & one dude at a desk.

I sat in a few cars, i could not find the handle to get out of the Aceman as it was blocked down low by my leg.

I asked the dude if i could speak to him about the JCW MINI Electric as a buying option and a test drive.

He said there were none & i could not get one and i said i would speak to MINI and arrange one, he then told me all about how the system had changed.

I asked about the JCW Petrol used car outside and could i go look at it. Since i wanted a petrol car instead of my diesel. He asked was i trading that in.

He then said it is not electric & i asked about a JCW Electric, and i said i know as i have a MINI Electric,

he asked was i trading it in and i told him no it was a Motability car & i really like it and maybe next year i will buy it, and he told me i cant, i told him maybe they could buy it & i buy from them as the system now is, he said no way does that happen.

He asked why i was looking at cars if i had one.

So i asked can i see inside the USED JCW Cooper & he went and got a key, blipped out the back door and opened it.

I had a look round and went in and said i will be back and try it later after i drive a JCW Electric, and asked for his card.

He handed one and said, 'but i do not sell cars'. I thought not with your attitude you don't.

So i had his name and his job title. It should read arse hole.

So he can stick with being a Stock Controller, but he might well of got commission on the sale for Cash Money if he bothered about customer service. Not my fault the salespeople were out or off.

Went round to BMW Service Centre and got my MINI serviced at appointed time, test drove the 3 MINI,s they had ready for me while car was being done. I mentioned the ARSE i had just spoken to that seemed to think i was a time waster.

She asked if i wanted the JCW MINI Approved used car taken round to them to take for a day.

I declined.

So MINI SE, Aceman JCW & Cooper SE test driven there.

So the next day i went through to MINI Edinburgh & drove a 2023 MINI Cooper JCW & a NEW JCW MINI Electric, full power & just nothing special.

Petrol suspension, tyres and seats and just too hard and the Electric one was less fun than a MINI E. 181bhp.

The other week I went out with a mate up on The Wirral to get her a new car. She's not short of a bob or two. We went to Skoda, Mazda and Lexus, and I was quite taken aback at their (poor) attitudes toward selling. I had very similar thoughts to yours. We then went to Tesla, where the experience was night and day - she now has a brand new Model 3.

The thing is they are in the Motor Trade, a customer service based supply industry, the salaries they get at different levels are advertised, they get perks, might do well, well paid, nice house nice car, not all are salespeople, there are management, could not sell Free Ice Cream, & some are salespeople, selling their personality to a potential customer, and these can be great and they stay places for years.

There are many total t!ts, often in the family, married into, somehow one of the Groups insiders, and they get away with being cheeky barstewards,

Going OT but yeah attitude in the industry is an issue and it doesn't matter the brand I've been treated like a king in high end dealerships and like scum in low end and vice versa. Experience can be night and day between staff at the same dealership and doesnt seem to matter how much money you have in your pocket.

I've always found Honda pleasent to deal with, and the guys at Ian Grieve in Falkirk have been excellent to me in all their franchises (Suzuki, Mazda, Jeep and Subaru), I bought cars from 3 out of 4 of them (no Jeeps).

We went to look at the ID3 at a local dealership in Perth, I let slip we were leasing so didn't blag a test drive. It was a young guy in a sharp suit that came up to us, normally I avoid them as they have all been to sent to 'how to sell cars school' which is really "how not to sell cars to me school", but actually he was a nice chap and no bother.

@Aspman A.M. Phillips now own Glenford.

Had a seat in the new e-Puma & it was nice and easy in and easy out and i like the wet fish carriers front and rear. Getting a wee shotty of one when i want.

Personally, if I'm shopping for a new car and was denied a test drive for that reason, I'd be writing up a complaint to VW UK regarding that dealership.

I know timing and location won't suit. But test drives at Fully Charged Show or Everything Electric had always been easy to get and no questions asked.

I wasn't denied but seemed cheeky to push when I was in no way interested in the car they had. Didnt have much time anyway with kids and dog in the other car.
There is another dealer closer to us with a used ID3 I'll go myself and get a drive in that.

Mrs said "I'm not driving a Ford", not quite sure what's behind the vehemence of that reply but I shant challenge it.
I've not had a Ford since about 2001 when I had a Mk1 Focus but tbh I quite liked that.

Arnold Clark Electric Innovation Centre Glasgow & their Pure Genius staff or the Pure Dead Brilliant ones have a selection of EV,s all in one place to check out. Amazingly AC can still have muppets at the Service Department that when doing a booking will ask if you want a fuel treatment offer.

will probably add the charge for it by default, then suggest your engine is coked up ad you need a clutch repacement too

Black is cheaper than silver on 12k.

Have asked if we can get a red one anyway as it seems nust that the colour changes the value based on mileage but must be some residual value calculation going on

News to me that the charger must connect directly to the electric meter point. Which is a PITA since we've a detached garage so where we'd like to charge is a looooong way from the meter.
Luckily we do have spaces at the house too but didn't really want the ugly black box out front.

Yes, installer will install henley blocks after your meter and then a fuse box after that for your charge point.

Garage generally have a lower rated cable, 16 or 20 amps. Even if it is 32 amps rated cable, it still wouldn't be enough to account for other loads you may have in the garage. Charge point also need more than power, they typically run "EV ultra" cable, which includes an ethernet cable inside the armoured cable. Is there option to run a dedicated cable to the garage?

I guess Octopus are installing the charge point. I wouldn't go with Ohme, OVO recently dropped support for this charge point, citing unwillingness to work with OVO on their new API. Zappi look questionable, especially the white one compared to something in the toilet 🙃. Hypervolt comes in different colours including white. I personally think it's the best looking and even the best charge point out there, I'd get this one if I'm installing now.

We're getting an Ohme, no choice really, that or cough £1000. Waitng on the power company to assess the meter cupboard. It's quite crowded and I refused to say if there was 'enough' space on the basis that I'm not a fecking installer.

It's amazing how uppity companies get when you refuse to sign off on things you have no qualification to do so. BA don't ask me to confirm the plane is safe and flightworthy when I book the tickets.

Charger installation approved remotely via photo/video.
Monkey with powertools arriving on 15 Aug to install.
Estimated delivery of EV a month later.

Make sure you ask the installer what size your main fuse is when they fit the charger as it guzzles up a fair amount of power obviously.

Mine was only 60 amp and with the charger using 32 of this when in use it doesn't leave a lot of headroom especially as I often try and run other stuff at night to take advantage of the cheap electricity (washing machine, dishwasher, air con etc).

Got my fuse upgraded to 100 amp by UK Power Networks a few weeks back (done FOC).

Interestingly enough they informed me that a 100 amp fuse allows you to run at up to 120 amps for several hours at a time without blowing it.

The charge points should de-rate itself as it senses higher power load. So if you put all your home appliances on at same time, the charge points will lower charge rate so that it never goes over the fuse rating (set on charge point by installer).

I think we've already got a 100A main fuse, it's max domestic supply without going 3 phase
