Check the clamps in fuel line (in and Out),i had mine loose in the past and gas leak plus bad smell in the engine bay.

Fuel filter is new? Spark plugs checked? Cabin filter is clean?

What should I check first

All clean

In the gas station you refill till the pump stops automaticallly (the well know ''clack'' sound) or you push for more fuel?

So just to confirm you have a 1.6 petrol multi-point injection engine?

Are you sure it's a fuel smell (presumably petrol(?)?

The smell is only now and then but when is it that you get the smell, after a refuel, at empty fuel tank, half-full or full fuel tank., when you first start the engine, or shut it off or between, hot weather or any weather, and so on and on . . . more information is needed please, only you are there when it happens.

If you smell it in the cabin more likely it might be from the engine bay but not necessarily, how does the fuel line run.

When you next smell it you need to use your nose and eyes and check the pick up from front to back or back to front, as said all hose connections and hoses, fuel rail is fully secure. Check the exhaust tailpipe end for discolouring, perhaps smell with engine running (from a sensible distance).

Things to check, fuel filler cap, around the tank, fuel pump, fuel line, engine bay.

Do you carry a spare fuel can, check that.

That's me out of ideas.

If you put more details in your profile for display in the 'Author stat' section of engine and gearbox, it'd save assumptions and remembering, lots of pick-up vary from factory standard now.

Good luck.

So its only now and then the sparks are new the petrol cap makes a click noise erm the fuel filter is couple years old erm its only when driving along have looked at exhaust seems ok erm dont know what else to say ?? And thankyou for your help

Very much doubt it but you could look at the petrol cap seal and make sure the petrol filler area is clean and clear.

I've had as brand new (from factory) metal fuel filter leak from crimp you'd hope and expect a two year old fuel filter to be fine but when looking for stray stuff like this it's best to be thorough and systematic, of course Sod's Law if you start at petrol tank end the leak will be at the engine and if you start at the engine ... .

Driving along when the engine's not long from first start, when cold or warmed or fully warmed?

So exhaust tailpipe end isn't black (or blacker than usual)?

That leaves the rest to check from previous posts.

Right on it tomorrow so where can I locate fuel lines ?? Also a while back i changed fuel pump and the petrol gauge isn't working well sometimes does but ds wrong..... so where would I find the filler neck vent ?? What could it be ?? Ps thanks also its only now and then and smell stays then goes then comes back so unsure also I know i have a exhaust blow on that time should I replace fuel lines ?? Also the charcoal canister what is that for ?? Thanks also what size fuel pipe needed thankyou

Also the charcoal canister what is that for ??

A) The first are behind the regulator pressure,i show them to you few days ago, easy access inside the engine bay.The others are metallic and beneath the car, you can't see them from above, you need a lift jack.

B)The charcoal canister, also known as a vapor or evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister, is a crucial part of a vehicle's emissions control system, particularly in gasoline-powered cars. In Skoda Felicias, it's designed to capture and store fuel vapors that evaporate from the fuel tank. These vapors are then purged back into the engine and burned when the engine is running and the purge valve is activated.

Functions.

Captures fuel vapors: The canister is filled with activated charcoal, which absorbs and traps fuel vapors.

Reduces emissions: By preventing these vapors from escaping into the atmosphere, the charcoal canister helps reduce harmful emissions and pollution.

Improves fuel efficiency: The captured vapors are eventually burned in the engine, which can contribute to slightly better fuel economy.

Prevents fuel tank pressure build-up: The canister also helps regulate pressure in the fuel tank, preventing it from becoming too high or low.

Here it is in Felicia, check all the connections.

So how would i know it's the canister?? Thats a silly question also the fuel pump gauge does the fuel pump when submerged have a locating point of just flaps around ?? Hence why gauge is odd ??

It's extremely difficult (almost impossible) to be the canister the culprit for the smell.

I had a similar problem in the past, check the fuel lines and wash the cabin filter, also clean the airways (dashboard) with spray.

The analog fuel gauge isn't 100% reliable,changes it's indication in uphill-downhill.

I don't know about the fuel pump much things but for sure has a locking point,it's steady.

The EVAP canister can get saturated and need emptying out clean and revitalising. If the canister is saturated perhaps one easy way to tell is to remove a pipe to it and use a sophisticated diagnostics tool called your nose (unless you have no sense of smell).

If new parts have been fitted like the fuel pump then that would be a good thing to check, the pump and fuel lines and fittings to and from it fitting.

The gauge being odd could be for many reasons, again if a new part has been fitted then I suspect the new part, it's fittings or installation, was the part correctly matched, installed correctly , where electrical contacts and wires checked and cleaned or repaired as required, connections and wiring all clean, secure and where appropriated protected. Then it might be the new part and installation is fine and just showing up a fault in the gauge or its connections and wiring. Putting new onto old can throw up new or additional issue(s) or involve more compromises, often it should not but it does.

Also follow the previous checks. Have a look at the petrol filler area and make sure it is all clean and any debris removed so any holes in the area are fully exposed and clean. Never overfill the fuel tank unless there is a problem with the fuel filling on the pick-up or petrol station fuel deliver pump you should always stop filling at the first click off of the petrol station petrol pump.

Good quality (usually landscape and not portrait) photos posted by you can help as only you see your pick-up items not anyone else posting here or viewing the post that may be able to offer help , advice and information. There can be so many variation from factory standard over the decades that can alter the answers given.

Do you mean flexible 'rubber' hoses or solid lines (not that you want to change the solid lines unless you really have to. Bear in mind if buying flexible 'rubber' then you want I to comply with the modern petrol you are using. Lots of Chinese 'rubber' hoses used to be absolute crap I don't know if that is still the case and even if you buy a brand labelled product it may still well be Chinese low quality - not all Chinese made stuff is bad some is very high quality.
