Faulty RNS510

Featured Replies

I had the opportunity to buy an untested RNS510 dead cheap as it had been sat for a number of years.

When I first powered it on the back light would flash on and off, so with nothing to lose I took it all apart and couldn't see anything obvious with dry solder joints, then put it back and tried again.

It now loads with Welcome to Volkswagen logo, and then a white screen with seemingly a template for the radio screen.

It shows this for about 15 seconds then goes to a black screen. None of the buttons or touchscreen respond apart from the power button which works to turn it back on.

There is a cd in the drive which won't eject with the button.

Any ideas?

@pab567 is this something you have come across before?

I've searched quite a bit and can't find anything like this

Yes, several times. Typically this is caused by faulty MPEG module. There are two repair options:

  1. Disable MPEG module in configuration (must be done with SetConfig, Martech or any other software tool for RNS510 that connects to the unit via UART) and then flash with modified firmware that skipd MPEG update. After repair you cannot play DVDs but the other functionality remains active.

  2. Replace mainboard.

You are a fountain of knowledge on this forum.

Are you able to help with where to find the firmware files?
