Looking for a new car to me with a DSG gearbox.

Featured Replies

Hi.

I am thinking of getting an upgrade on my current 2008 1.9 PD Octavia diesel estate for a slightly newer one with a DSG box. What tests do I need to do whilst test driving to make sure I'm not buying one that's got issues. I'll most likely buy from a garage and buy an extended warranty just in case but any preventative steps would be much less stressful. My garage has said the 6 speed seems more robust than the 7 speed and they should be serviced every 40 000 miles. Looking through adverts hardly any mention about having the service done which I thought would have been a good selling point. They can't be that bad can they as I see lot of Octavia / superb's used as taxis with the DSG and they do mega miles

Thanks

You are right, they can not be that bad.

A low mileage one might not be as good as a higher mileage.

Consider the DPF from how the car was used. A car used on long runs might be a better choice than one used for short runs.

Lots of Superb / Octavia with 1.6 TDI CR,s and 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG are used as taxis or were.

Some had no issues and some plenty with engine or DSG.

Superb / Octavia with FWD & 2.0 TDI,s will have been used as taxis / airport transport and very likely serviced as required, engine and DQ250 DSG.

You just need to find one that is good and not one someone got rid of because they were facing a big bill.

Thanks for some very useful information. Sorry is the DQ250 the gearbox to go for then ? What years would have this have been fitted? Is that 6 or 7!speed ? As you say an ex taxi would have been regularly serviced and kept clean so not put off by that . apologies for all the questions

2003 was when VW started using DQ250 6 speed wet clutch DSG,s these run until some vehicles got DQ381 7 Speed wet around 2017 & on.

PS

Maybe lots of Taxi,s were serviced and cared for, and some will have been treated as easy come easy go.

A history of some kind like receipts / invoices for DSG servicing would be nice.

This does not have to be Main Dealer servicing. The DQ250 Oil and filter changes were not complicated.

?

Are you looking at cars with 80,000-120,000 miles covered, or higher miles than that?

I would definitely be looking for lots of service history and proof of DSG service. I thought this would be a good selling point for a private or dealer sale. It wouldn't put me off going for a higher mileage car as long as it's got good history. I guess in my budget it would be nice to find some within the 80-120000 range but they will probably be higher mileage cars.

Thanks

Put a wanted ad on here maybe.

There are some cracking cars that have been sold on here in 'cars for sale'. .

Dealers / traders can not make a big deal about a service history if there is not one.

There are places that do get a load of paperwork / service history and maybe to not pass that on.

Hi

Never thought about putting a wanted as on here. I'll check through the adverts too you never know something might stand out as a good deal. Thanks again
