12v power supply only when lights are on

Featured Replies

Hi peeps.

Couldn't find this anywhere but wanting to install ambient lighting on my 2011 Octavia VRS.

I only want the lights to be on when the headlights are on.

I've seen in videos that you can hardwire onto the 12v cigarette lighter in VWs with the grey wire which is only on with the lights. But accessing that on my octi means pulling out the entire centre console which I will avoid at all costs.

Is there any other easy to access 12v power supply on the car.

Appreciate your ideas 😁

Is this the sort of thing you are after .......

Hi all.

Quick update. Finally got around to installing ambients.

Good news is master controller along with 2 ambients, footwells and switch installed.

Bad news is I gave a sub controller a go on the driver door. But couldn't get power whatsoever. Not sure why. Tapped into the supposed ground and live but no luck.

Also realised multimeter shows 12v on that live wire even when car is off which is strange.

Any help would be appreciated 👍

Door power is on for about 10 minutes after you remove the key so you can operate the windows and some other things. Goes off when the door is locked.

I see. Any suggestions of which wire to tap into for a live feed on ignition only instead?

Look in the fuse list for the fusebox at the end of the dash for a fuse that is in the ignition only group.

Then take out the fuse for chosen point and replace it with a similar unit to this of the same current rating.

Put the removed fuse in the correct side and another fuse along side it of the correct rating for your new circuit, which is then wired to the pigtail.

Oh sorry maybe I worded question wrong. So this led Ambient lighting kit has a main controller. And 4 sub controllers for each door.

I've already hardwired the main controller into the fuse box and that's running the front led strips and footwell lights.

I'm wondering what wires to tap into in the doors for a 12v live feed. In my image the red and yellow wire is supposedly the main live feed for door but I didn't get any luck with a t tap connector onto it.

I'm wondering if there's another wire in each door that would supply 12v power.

So...turns out that Octavia's don't have a 12v power supply in the doors.

Anyone wanting to install the new trendy LED Ambient symphony lighting kits etc beware :D

You'll need to tap into the fuse box and feed wires through the car and to each door harness in order to power the sub/slave controllers on each door.

I tried multiple times to tap into the main power cable for the driver door being the only thick red cable. Multimeter shows 12v. But wouldn't power the controllers and therefore the lights at all. Couldn't figure out why either :/
