Bump Steer

Featured Replies

Hi folks

This is my first foray into asking questions on this site, so please treat me gently...

I have a MY2016 1.6 Diesel Estate, which is basic spec. The wheels are 16" and the tyres look like balloons. As I drive over bumps, the car lurches towards the bump (in my very old Moggie Minor this was referred to as bump steer).

What would you recommend that I do? I reckon the options are either to get some 18" wheels; change (some/all of) the bushings to polybushes; Change the shock absorbers to Bilstein B6 non-DCC (yes I have read the forum posts)... or what? I would appreciate any advice as I have come from driving a SAAB 9-5 which I was so familiar with. What is the most effective?

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

I have 17" rims on mine ( same model as yours ) and have never experienced this problem.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

16s on my TSI, same experience as Gammy. I certainly wouldn't call them 'balloons'!

What pressures are you running?

Thanks for your responses, Gammy and Warrior. I am running the correct pressures as detailed in the handbook.

Time to get the crowbar out and test the bushes then.

This issue sounds to me just that the suspension in the superb is like a bouncy castle.

I have 3 large speed bumps on my street.

In my Octavia vRS you can comfortable drive over them at 50kph and the suspension reacts immediately, no rebound or bouncing.

In my superb sportline taking the same bumps at 30kph feels like you are going to take off, then bouncing on a trampoline and then feels like it bottoms out going down the back side before bouncing again...

It's the only thing I'm disappointed with in the car & wish I'd bought the DCC option.

Yep.

I thought the best mode for speed humps would be comfort but no that's the slowest and most uncomfortable due to the bottoming out and the bounce.

Turns out Sport is the best, no bottoming out, no bounce.

Update for anyone who is interested. I replaced the rear shocks with Bilstein B6's and it was clear the previous shock absorbers had gone. A very easy job and now the handling is much better.

I have still got the front ones to do.
