Replacement battery

Featured Replies

My 6.5yr old battery seems to have given up the ghost after not driving the car for over four weeks. It's an OEM EFB Moll 6R0 915 105 B 12V 69Ah 360A DIN 680A EN / SAE / GS. It was down to 2.5V and is currently on trickle charge with a CTEK MDS 5.0 (in the faint hope it may be recoverable).

If i have to replace it, i'm looking at two options from Tayna:

  • Enduroline 096EFB 70Ah 650A EN - 83£ delivered

  • Enduroline 096AGM 70Ah 760A EN - 113£ delivered

It looks like i have a thermal sleeve around the battery - see photo - so i assume i could go AGM. But i know that if i switch to AGM i will need to activate it. For this i would invest in an adapter like the Vgate iCar Pro2S and CarScanner Pro app. That will add another 35£ to the overall cost.

My questions:

  • If i go with the Enduroline EFB, is it a close-enough spec to the Moll to get away without activation?

  • Is the AGM worth the extra cost/effort?

A problem with failing to adapt the replacement battery is that the alternator control unit will not know to reset any faults, recorded against the old battery, that may be limiting the charge rate.

That's a pretty good price for the AGM and given the markedly improved performance over the EFB - and as the adaptation really should be done anyway - I'd certainly go for that.

Have you checked the VCDS register to see if a member near you can help with the adaptation?

Personally I’d go with Varta (and I did), well respected and OEM for VAG and many other German cars

Thanks @Warrior193 . I guess faults might be an issue given how low the existing battery got. Also, i did call out Green Flag before starting the CTEK trickle charge, and they tried boosting it etc. Their conclusion was that it needs to be replaced, but that i could try the trickle charge first.

@Danoid Varta is sold out. Anyway , I'm not too bothered about brand. More concerned about AGM and adaptation.

The adaptation is a doddle with the right kit. A 5 minute job which most indys could do for little money. A main dealer would likely charge considerably more though.
