is replacing radiator top coupler easy&do-able with common tools for a sidewalk repair?

Featured Replies

hi guys, ive noticed in the last days that i have a coolant leak near my radiator. when i tried to figure out where it comes from (if the problem is with the cooling tube or with part) i accidently broke a small part of my radiator coupler part number: 500 122 291E

unfortunately i was not wise enough to do it at a place where i have all of my tools and now i am planning on driving to my house to bring the tools i have (non specalized tool).

it appears like an easy repair by all standards, can you confirm it/tell me what problems can a raise when making the repair?

ill also need to extract the broken peace out of the coolant tube/cut it and short fit it for now until ill get the car for an appropriate time and place for a full on repair.

technical data:

broken part number - 500 122 291E

engine type - 1,6/77 kW MPI engine

tommrow ill upload some pictures

Part number will begin with 5Q0 rather than 500, I believe.

The connection to the radiator may be very stiff to remove, and require more force than expected.

Wriggling it in rotation while pulling may help, obviously after releasing the wire clip fully first.

It may be best to completely remove this wire clip to prevent it jumping back into its locking position while wrestling.

thanks! i had removed the wire clip like you advised and it was easy work!. i had a broken peace of the coupler inside the coolant tube and when i removed it, and it had left small plastic peaces inside the tude (like poweder). do you think i should remove and tube completely from the other end and flash it or just filing it with coolant and slushing it around then spill the coolant out with the broken peaces would be enough? (of course before installing the new part and everything).

If you have the new part available the easy way to replace the hose is get a 5 litre can cut the top off it poition it under the hose in the gap and cut thriught the hose with a hacksaw the cut off can will catch most of the coolant, then again cut a nother bit out so you have a gap in the middle of the hoose remove the clips might be the spring type so a pair of plumbers pilers would help and then you have enough room to pull the broken pipe off , when fitting the new pipe if you just smeer a little washing up liquid on the inside of the new hose it will go on the fittings much better don't forget to put the clips on the pipe first, best to top up the system with a ready mix or you could use the fluid you saved as long as thee are no bits in it if you need new coolant to top up you must use the correct sort that suits vw as using any other coolant can lead to water pump failiure later on

could i just connect the new part with the old tube then drive my car to my garage where i have the capacity to deal with unexpected issues?
