Amundsen screen locking

Featured Replies

Good afternoon, I have tried searching but nothing was coming back with my search string. I have a 2017 1.2 Outdoor that has done 54,000 miles. Over the last three months ( and most noticeable on holidays) the touch screen becomes unresponsive. If I do a hard reset ( hold power down 10-15 sec) the device re boots and everything works.

Then maybe two or three days later , the problem returns. I can live with re booting , but recently a new “ feature” has appeared. Whilt driving along not using the sat nav or radio, the screens suddenly start a random sequence of POI/ location/ three routes/ POI literally changing on their own every second. Again a re booting stops this and normal operation is resumed.

Research on the web suggests

Digitizer

Dirt on screen

Low battery voltage

In order, I understand digitizer issues effect one area eg unable to put in post codes etc, this is not the case. Either the whole screen works, or nothing works except the first screen prompt you touched which remains green

Dirt on screen, I have cleaned the screen with a spex wipe.

Low battery voltage, the first time we witnessed the problem was after a 200 mile mostly motorway run. I have no slow cranking. The issue also start right off the drive eg just set off.

I use a local indy for service and so they cannot do a firmware update , they suggested a radio / infotainment specialist.

Any suggestions, the thought of £1000+ for a Skoda unit does not attract me.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions or advice

Steve

I'd say the digitizer from past experience, random radio channel changes and self dialing calls also pop up, more so when its cold I found when mine died.

Its a cheap DIY fix in about an hour with a set of Torx screwdrivers and a new digitiser from ebay.

this video is for an infotainment unit with a CD player but the process is the same, just make sure everything is seated correctly, I accidentally dislodged one of the SD card readers and had to disassemble it all again

Steve , thanks for that. The video and the next one it linked to all seemed straight forward. Looks like Im buying a new digitizer and some plastic iphone type tools for trim removal.

Then deep breaths and go for it!

Get a set of small Torx screwdrivers for the fiddly screws. If you are systematic it's easy. Also, make sure that the SD card reader is seated correctly in the PCB before putting everything back together.

If that doesn't work don't rule out the problem possibly being related to the battery, particularly if it is still the original. There are lots of posts scattered across the forum where weird electronics related problems came down to a problem with an apparently healthy battery actually being not quite up to the job. I experienced this myself with odd lights appearing and going off at random even though the car started without a problem.

For what it is worth, if the battery is either the original or possibly a replacement getting on a bit at least replacing it isn't a huge expense even if it turns out this isn't the cause of your problem and does mean you are going into winter with a new and hopefully reliable battery.

Hope you get your problem sorted.

Thanks Paul , I agree on a scale of diminishing returns a replacement digitizer is a low cost first option. I believe the battery to be original so Im not ruling that out.

Plastic trim picks and screen per SteveJD suggestion. Lastly torx driver set dusted off from the garage.

If I get a chance to fit it next week when it lands Ill feedback onto here either way.

Thanks to everyone for their input 👍

Well digitizer fitted and unit is working! Cant vouch for the locking up as it was intermittent before. Ill try it next week in anger but first impressions are good.

I used the “broken fixed” video suggested and the Ebay screen linked by Steve jd

I hadn’t appreciated or realised you had to go down to T6 Torx so a quick trip to Screwfix afforded me a 5/6/7/8/9 set for six quid.

I hastened to Prezafabs warning about making sure the sd card readers were seated.

Fiddlyest thing was getting the thin aluminium screen surround off as once I loosened off one side , the opposite side popped back in

Total time from in situ to re installed 90 mins.

Hi all, I've just replaced the digitizer on our 2016 Yeti and found this video extremely helpful. I thought I should share with everyone because if you are like me, I was not brave enough to just dive in without exact instructions. Also, as per the earlier reply, ensure you have T6 & T8 torx bits (this is a jolly good excuse to buy a whole set of torx bits)

Well as promised, feedback on the new screen digitiser and…………its worked🙂

So anyone reading this thread in the future that has the symptoms of the screen freezing occasionally or in my case every other start up, then a £25 digitiser from ebay and a bit of diy is the solution.

Thanks again to all the folk who chipped in with advice. What a great forum for a brilliant little car
