Tyre noise or wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

There are several threads on this issue already. I had convinced myself that the “feathering” on a six year old nearside front tyre was to blame for the noise with resonance at 20/40/60 mph and the noise more evident on the nearside. I’d had this issue on a previous Octavia which was caused by a tyre and my current 10 year old car had only 18k miles on the clock with no classic increase in noise when loading one side. Also no noises/movement when testing/spinning the wheel.

Two new tyres didn’t cure it ☹️ A new wheel bearing did.

Sometimes only trial and error will do 😀

Not too difficult a repair and £85 part vs the £500 from my local dealer.

18k miles and needing a new wheel bearing?

Was it front or rear?

I suspect mine has a dodgy wheel bearing as the droning noise at 70 is still there after replacing all 4 tyres and having the wheel alignment done. Maybe they didn't fit them properly in the factory or used cheap parts. I would expect 10+ years and 100K+ miles out of a wheel bearing.

It's a 2015, so it is possible - if a bit unusual.

@kernowalan I feel like I’m in the same boat. I get the same symptom at the speeds you described. Twice I’ve mentioned it to the Main Dealer when in for a Service/MOT. On one occasion I took a technician out for a drive, they suggested that this is down to tyre wear and even flagged it in the vehicle inspection (although they didn’t flag it the following year).

The car came with Michelin PS5 fitted all around and there is noticeable “sawtooth” wear on the inside edge of both rear tyres when running your hand over them but with over 4mm tread depth remaining I’m reluctant to change them out.

Having previously ran Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 on my diesel vRS I switched to these on the front when they were worn and haven’t had any issues with abnormal wear.

Now I’ve used up my Service Plan I’ll be using an independent however I’ll be a bit miffed if it turns out to be wheel bearings and I’m out of the 2 year approved used warranty.

Not an obvious diagnosis as no classic wheel bearing symptoms. Proof is in the pudding though. Zero issues and 3k since the change.

Car has obviously been sat still for extended periods by its older owners.
