Help my aircon's packed up!

Featured Replies

Hi all, first post here so hope you can help. :)

Bought an 01 Fabia about 3 months ago. Delighted with it.

Last month, I noticed the aircon would spill out hot air infrequently.

Today, no aircon!

When I open the bonnet, and press the a/c button, I can hear the compressor (and can feel a gush of hot air?)

What's wrong?

Get a VAG-COM fault code readout - suspect it might be the evaporator temp sensor :D

At least it's nice and cool at the mo so you don't need it

Today the aircon has returned!

Seems like it is the temp sensor,

...not sure I have the time for a DIY job, how much would I pay at a dealer?

Had this on two Fabias this week, unfortunately the part is on back order.

The dealer will do a "dash out" job I think which is booked at around 3 hours work! I'll let you do the sums ;)

how many miles has the car done?

air con doesnt last forever . might need a leakage test and a re gas perhaps??

it's done just under 70k kms (i'm in france) about 45k miles if my maths are right and has been serviced by skoda from new.

are leakages common with fabias?

Not any more so than with any other car' date=' but after two or three years aircon systems often need topping up with gas.

My advice to you is to get it on Vagcom & check for any fault codes, that will tell you if the evaporator temp sender is faulty or something else.:)

You don't want to have to change the sender unless you really have to, I've done the job and it's not nice to do because of the location of the sender way up under the dash.

It might assist if you have a read at: [url']http://www.briskoda.net/forums/fabia/sensor-evaporater-outlet-temp/47401/[/url] but get it checked with Vagcom to see if any code's been logged first before doing anything else.

Good luck !

Just to add to the excellent advice td-eye gave, one of the main causes of leaks is not running the air con frequently enough. This means that the lubricating oil in the system is not circulated. I run the air con in my cars all year round. Interestingly, after 4 years, the Mondeo still doesn't need regassing :D
