Fuse for rear wiper - question from a beginner

Featured Replies

Hey,

I've literally never worked on a car before so this might be a really stupid question.....

Having issue with my rear wiper (wiper arm not moving, but rear screen wash working fine).

I've wanted to check the fuses so I've removed the glovebox and identified the fuse - seems to be in position 217 if my reading of the manual is right.

Seemed seated fine, so I took it out to confirm it was the correct fuse....and nothing changed - the rear wiper still not moving but the rear screen wash works.

So questions.

1. Am I being thick - if I remove a fuse I expect the thing it protects to no longer work. Is that wrong?

  1. Is the rear wiper on a different fuse to the rear wash?

  2. Anything else obvious I'm missing?

I've checked all the wiring and can't see any obvious breaks around the boot lid, so I'm assuming the motor has gone, but I want to be sure it's not just a dodgy fuse before I buy a new motor.

Sorry - typo in my original post - fuse I've checked is number 47

Rear wash is powered from same wires and motor as front wash, just with different polarity.

So it will not be affected by removal of rear wiper fuse.

Do you have a meter to check the fuse ? Or a new or spare fuse to put in it's place ? Definitely you will want to be sure it's not just the fuse before assuming the motor is faulty. As Breezy Pete said the fact the washer still works has nothing to do with it.

Check there's power getting to the motor.

My previous 2008 Octavia 2 got through two rear wiper motors in 160,000 miles. Something to do with the seals for the concentric water pipe that passes though the motor assembly not being terribly good causing corrosion which ultimately makes the whole thing seize up. Not repairable!

Make sure yu get the correct replacement - there are two different types...
