Parcel shelf rattle

Featured Replies

Recently noticed a rattling coming from the rear of the car. On closer inspection I noticed that one of the "clips" that sit around the parcel shelf rest is missing (see picture)!!

I've tried quite an internet search for this as a part to buy but with no luck.

Other than getting a new parcel shelf (an extreme measure I grant you), has anyone had this issue and been able to rectify it?

I've had this car 3 months (23 plate) and still under warranty - potentially clutching at straws if going down that route...

Welcome your thoughts.

If you haven't already, I'd try removing the shelf & going for a drive, just to verify that is indeed the cause of the rattle. I would have thought that even with the missing part, the other half would keep it in place.

A great many years ago, I had a similar problem. I wrapped insulation tape round and round the "fixed" part on the bulkhead, to reduce the space so the shelf didn't rattle. A temporary repair perhaps, or just to determine this is the offending source of the problem.

Is it possible at all to remove the one from the other side and get a copy 3D printed I wonder?

Now there’s a thought!

Update.

So tried driving around without the parcel shelf and no noise.

When I went to refit it into place, I noticed that it wasn’t seated to begin with (!) but now seated correctly, it does not make any noise. It’s too dark (and raining) at the moment to take a picture but will do to show the difference.

The irony though is that even with the plastic “clip” missing, it doesn’t make a noise - probably missing from the outset.

The idea of printing a 3D part however is intriguing….and I have to admit, I did consider using LX tape or Gaffa tape to do the job too ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Our Karoq has the retractable cover, but we also have an Ateca with a hard shelf and I didn't recognise those rests and sure enough they're not there. Instead there's a lip for the shelf to rest on. Odd how VW Group would make such changes in what are basically the same car, made in the same factory.

Another thing is the rear seatbelts.... The metal part that plugs in will rattle if it is not seated in the holder when in the stowed position

Like so

It drove me made for a day when I kept hearing a rattle every now and again. Having had the problem with the parcel shelf before, I took that out and reseated it, but the rattle was still there...

I think you misunderstand. The picture I showed as the buckle stowed correctly in place. It does NOT rattle in that position.

It only rattles when it is not stowed and looks like this.

The buckle here is loose. People getting out do just that, and 99.9% and children/grandchildren of all ages don't think, or know, the buckle needs stowing.
With the covers, you suggest the buckle won't fit the recess.

Because 90% of the time it is just me and the wife, the buckles are correctly stowed most of the time and other times I remember to stow them when I get home or what ever.

I have applied the 3rd solution in all of my belts and still fit in the lock buckle, the cover is very thin, no problem with the lock tongue.

There are Belt Holders in the market to keep in place.
