Advice please new stereo followed by flashing glowplug light, poor starting, idling & limp mode

Featured Replies

Hello, my first post in many years having bought a very nice 2014 Fabia II Greenline 1.2tdi manual estate. Its on 86932 miles.

Last weekend, we installed an Android Auto radio, using fuse 1 with a piggyback in order to create a switched ignition feed for the radio.

Over the next day or so, my son was complaining of poor starting, bad idle and flashing orange glowplug light. Figured it might be battery related (sapped a lot of juice setting up the radio), so i charged it. No signs of excessive smoke or anything.

This improved things a little but the glowplug light still flashes. However, attaching a modern bluetooth 5.2 obd2 reader and starting it having been left for a few days and it struggled a bit to start, the light was still flashing, even when warm it wouldn't rev past 3000 rpm and no fault codes could be found on either Car Scanner Pro or Torque apps.

Any thoughts please? Was fuse 1 a bad idea? Is it likely a coincidence? Likely to actually be the glowplugs? (87k miles is typical life?) Many thanks! Jon

I would remove piggy back and see if it makes any difference then you will know if its affecting car. The fact it wont rev past 3000 but no fault codes is odd unless it has a stationary limiter like my Octavia. If it were gloplugs then I would assume it would have a code

Are both your brake lights working as blown bulbs or bad switch I think can cause this. Not sure if the brake switch is a single switch or has two switches. One for lights and the other to tell ECU brakes are on? I have read that certain aftermarket radios can cause problems scanning car.

Can you confirm that the revs being limited while driving - or only while in neutral?

As Alasdair says, there is a rev limiter while vehicle is in neutral.

If it doesnt improve with the radio disconnected .you said its also poor in starting it might be worth trying a new or known good battery. If theres low voltage then it can cause all manner of problems especially random dash warning lights plus if the starter motor is running slower its a lot more difficult to start a diesel as they need a high crank speed.

Maybe the battery you have was on its last legs and by going flat it finished it??
