advice needed on gearbox

Featured Replies

i bought a 2nd hand superb estate about a week ago and before i had an vauxhall before . The skoda is notchy in 1st-3rd gear 😭 is there anybody that is in the edinburgh or surrounding area that could be recommended ? i know all forums have there gurus , at first i thought was my imagination / user error but i don't think it is , apart from that car seems to drive amazing 😊

Is it when cold or warm or both?

Does it still not change smoothly when the box is in sport mode?

What service history do you have with the vehicle?

What year and mileage does it have on it now?

May be in need of a service/oil change rather than an issue with the box.

it's a 2019 and it's 166000 yikes , was used as a taxi for last 3 years and got paperwork with it for servicing and work carried out over they 3 years but the paperwork on proper scrutiny when i got home is a bit questionable i think but i have no clue about cars or what im looking at 😭 i would say a little better on warm up i'm not sure 🤔

i love it and it's a lovely car , but the clunky notchy gears have caused me concern , never tried sports mode i will do that today i have just been using my old vauxhall most of time .

Is it a manual transmission or DSG automatic? A manual would suggest that the issue is possibly clutch/dmf related. If it is an automatic then I think it would likely be overdue an oil change, in either case look for a VW/Skoda specialist local to you and maybe ask on a separate post to see if they come recommended or not.

An oil change on the dsg box will be considerably cheaper than a manual needing a full clutch kit.

it's a manual and according to the paperwork it had a new clutch last year but i'm not sure ?! the paperwork is a bit sketchy 😭

Sketchy? Being ex taxi that may be the case and some will do the work themselves as I know a local company do so.

It’s possible that it hasn’t been bled correctly on the hydraulics so how does the clutch feel? Slightly spongy would be an indicator and early bite point maybe? Poor alignment of the clutch on the gearbox spline could also cause possible issues.

Not really sure what issues these cars have with manual transmission as mine is the first VW group car (DSG auto) I’ve owned since an 80’s Scirocco GTi and things are very different now from that period.

Hopefully someone can chime in and offer better help to you soon.

I would get the gearbox oil changed but use the proper 75w vw spec oil such as get the wrong oil the change will be notch when the box is cold

Also try resetting the gearbox linkages and take it from there

how do i reset them ? and does that work in manual also ? gears 5 , 6 and reverse are brilliant just a shame about the other gears 😞

Here is a guide for 5 speed box but the principal is the same for 6 speed box.

Can't comment on the codes but there is a MBQ gear linkage kit that replaces and upgrades the plastic bits on your gearbox linkages that causes imprecise shifting. It costs £110 including postage from Diesel Geek from US.

thank you so much , i don't do a lot of driving in dark as dont like it now that im getting old haha , but had to use tonight when dark , headlights were not very bright and 2 more errors appeared 😭 stop start error and start stop error , i give up but wondering apart from the gearbox if the rest could be linked to a duff alternator or battery 🤷‍♀️

As mentioned on proper post (and here for completeness) - test (or change) battery first. Pretty sure that’s not linked to the gearbox issue though so divide and conquer the problems.
