Brake fluid change cost at dealer

Featured Replies

I've always been in two minds abour whether brake fluid change is simply a rip-off, and it's always miffed me with VW service plans that the brake fluid change isn't included. Quite how they get away with this on "All In" is a mystery to me. I notice it is now included on EVs (the intro of which has caused VW to change the first change to 2yrs from 3).

Last time I refused it at £80 and when I picked the car up the dealer said they'd done it as goodwill - some justification that the servicing had got messed up as they did a longlife service as the car's first service.

Using the Skoda website for my local dealer brake fluid change now adds an incredible £108.52 to the cost.

I wondered what Audi charge, so used a random Q3 registration - local dealer £52 and all the local Audi dealers (the Audi site shows the pricing for them all) are in the £50-£60 range.

This is Skoda Colchester.

Edit:

Checking Mitchell in Chester I get £74.92, no idea why the discrepancy. So I'd be inclined to look at another dealer, Audi or an independent. Just make sure you get an invoice to keep as evidence, as it won't show on the Skoda app.

Well that's weird - here's what I get from Mitchell's (via the Skoda website):

What car are you using to check (model and age)? I'm using our 22 Karoq. They also quoted £80 on the phone for our Kamiq.

25 Plate Karoq SEL Edition.

Skoda changed to first at 2 years then each 2 rather than first at 3 years then at 2 years as far back as 2015 with All New Mk3 Fabias. That was in the UK. Nothing to do with EV,s & their Schedule, Regime or Guidelines.

Thanks - I get the same price as you did.

I tried an older model and that gets the higher price.

I wondered if it recognises the request as implausible on a 25 model?

A 72 plate comes out at £87.18 at Colchester. Looks like they set pricing depending on whatever they think they can get away with!

Hmm - we had a 2016 Tiguan and that was 3yrs. The dealer forgot to mention it, and thought the Haldex was 4 yrs, when it had been 3yr for some time. So they did both FOC.

Here's a generic 2021 Skoda service price list from elsewhere in the forum showing first BF change at 3yrs, then 5, 7yrs etc.

I said Mk3 Fabie. & the Service Sheets showed 2 years before 2016. Nothing regarding VW. Yes above which i posted from the 2018 & 19 and 20 versions many many rimes, a the 2021. showing DSG @ 40,000 even though the DQ200 & DQ381 were not. Never has been by year, so at 4 years unless the miles covered. Then the Haldex was @ 4 years / 40,000 miles until Skoda got to 3 years / 30,000 miles. The Air Filter at 6 years / 60,000 miles is a joke. Some never even checked them at the Services before that. No sign of the VAQ diff in that.

This shouldn't really be a routine feature, dealers, like the independent I use, should be able to test the fluid and only change it when needed.

Testing of the brake fluid for H20 is 'Simply Clever'. it is obviously just the brake fluid in the reservoir that is tested because they are not letting any out of the calipers and testing that.

I don't understand why it's not in the service plans - unless, in VW Group's eyes, it doesn't really need doing.

Especially now they've moved to 2yr intervals, and new car, approved used, and All In service plans all run for 2yr periods where dealers will insist on fixed interval servicing, there's absolutely no reason why a brake fluid change couldn't be incorporated.

We had a Mitsubishi and the 2yr service includes it, and it's also included with our Hyundai. Same with a Merc I had on a service plan.

People might well not want to be paying for it. There are many here that post they have never changed brake fluid on vehicles and not crashed and died. Skoda Approved Used Cars. FULL MAIN DEALER SERVICE HISTORY. They will sell you are car not Serviced to the Manufacturers Guidelines, Schedule or advised servicing. They will sell them with no history of Brake Fluid service replacement at 2 or 3 or 4 years and they will often not do it as a Pre Sale service.

If you think you are being ripped off by the main stealer buy one of these: From £3-9 depends who is selling. Google brake fluid tester!

Considering just how highly hygroscopic brake fluid is, is it not reasonable to think that any moisture would tend to migrate throughout the system?
