Diesel leak under the bonnet - hard plastic pipe split or blow off?

Featured Replies

Hoping someone can help explain what has happened to our Yeti..

One of the diesel pipes under the bonnet has come apart and dumped 10% of the tank in the process.

Is this a known failure point on these engines, or has something else likely caused the pipe to separate?

Any help much appreciated !

Have you had any maintenance on the car lately? Anyone lifted the bonnet?

Other than that, try to refit it & check to see if it's a good tight fit.

I had a 2L 2017 Diesel Yeti for eight years & never have I seen that happen.

No, nothing recently, but I am traveling in Europe and it has been very cold at night (-12”c)

If you say you are travelling, have you refitted it?

As its very cold, that could mean it has become very stiff.

Might be worth fitting a new hose in that case.

It does look like it has come adrift & out of the metal clip that should hold it in position.

Obviously I can't tell for sure, but it looks like the hose was not fully pushed into its position enough.

Hi

I suspect this is part of the return circuit that takes unused (leakoff) fuel back into the system. The pressure in this circuit is only moderate, which is why rubber hoses are adequate. It's possible that the connection was not fully secure, and with cold weather and increased fuel viscosity the pressure rose just enough to push it off completely. I'd recommend a new hose unless it's obvious that the fitting can be re-mated properly.

Thanks @Austin 7 I also suspect that some side effect of the cold caused this failure. I have found a photo of another engine showing the part, it looks like a part of our hose is actually missing. Hopefully a replacement hose set will fit this and it is not a sign of a faulty injector or something else..

Just a follow up to say all of the pipes highlighted below were replaced and the car runs fine.

There was some weird stuff with the fuel gauge not reading properly, but a battery disconnect for 30 mins solved that.

I guess -20'c was too much for the little plastic retainer (circled) and that caused the pipe to separate.

@markob

Thanks for the resolution feedback

Yeah its not say 5 years old is it? With the availability of good parts I wish many years ago I had ditched my Vectra VXR in favour of say some estate VRS or Superb 4x4 with at least the 2.0t petrol.

Had our Yeti just over a year, ignoring repair work expected of an ageing high mileage car its solid and at least VCDS is very good and theres tons of support out there for it. I'm glad I kept in with the all season tyres with brand new on the front last July, the Maxxis are keeping it in shape on these frozen roads well.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 on the Vectra not so 😂

Is that not just one single pipe?

It is sold as a single pipe assembly, but I think it is made up of small pipe sections

The local garage just replaced it with a complete new assembly from Skoda, they were not up for fitting non genuine parts, I'm ok with that. Have read some people having issues with the pattern versions of this pipe.
