Just got a used Superb 2013 for towing a caravan. Inspection says rear secondary springs snapped...

First post, hello! We've just bought a used Skoda Superb 2013 estate, 2.0 diesel automatic, with an after-sale tow bar. We aim to pull a (smallish) caravan with it. Our local garage inspected it straight after purchase and found (among other things) that 'both rear secondary springs are snapped'. Which sounded serious! As I understand it, these secondary/auxiliary springs are inside the main rear springs, specifically for helping with heavier loads, not day to day driving. But after some research, I'm confused. So - questions. Does anyone know, were the secondary / auxiliary springs part of the original car? Or would they have been added by the owner afterwards to try and make it tow better? (The garage fixing it near the place we bought it doesn't seem to know). Should we be looking to make sure those secondary / auxiliary springs are replaced, or should we be just trying to get the right strength of main rear spring for towing? Thanks all.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

I'd take a guess that the spring assisters would be aftermarket too - I believe that any changes from the factory for towing pack would involve fitting heavier-rate springs and shock absorbers.
